LPGA commentators' most over-used phrases....

Do you tire of having to hear and re-hear phrases like these -

 

- And Lydia was the youngest ever to.......

- Sei Young is actually a black belt, and her father is an instructor...

- And Ariya has a sister Moriya who is also a good golfer....

- And surely Gerina will win at some point on the Tour.....

 

Each new Tour event is starting to sound like Groundhog day.....

 

What can you add to the list?

I rarely disagree with anyone here but that's so wrong. Abbott is easily the least hackneyed of all their commentators. He speaks the most naturally in my opinion.

My issue with him is he speaks too much. Often speaking over Rankin. I'm just not a fan. On a separate note, last evening watching the Barclay's replay, Jim Gallagher Jr. was also mega annoying. Sometimes less is more when it comes to golf commentary. I often tune out when someone (Gallagher Jr.) dominates the telecast and talks just to talk.

Have to agree here. It seems to be his allocated role to state the bleedin' obvious, which he does again and again and again. He may have a reasonably natural speaking style, but he's not exactly a lateral thinker, and he does tend to big things up.

Almost all of them state the obvious at some point, but Tom is a gem. The award for for the most obvious case of stating the obvious unanimously goes to Annika.

Not quite the same thing, but Judy Rankin uses "for sure" as a filler. You can hear it echoed in some of the players whose first language isn't English--except they seem to use it to buy time to find the right word. Lorena Ochoa especially. I think it's kind of neat that Judy's phrasing carries through to the younger players.

I can't watch LPGA. The announcers are so bad. "she's left herself with a very difficult up and down. She'll be lucky to get this within 5 feet." She got up and knocked it to 6 inches like it was nothing.

 

I find the announcers to be patronizing and sexist.

I keep wondering why we need commentators at all anyway....all they ever say is things like " she comes up just short on that one " or " misses the green to the left " - don't they realise TV IS A VISUAL MEDIUM - I can see all that for myself !

 

The only added value a commentator can have is if they can see or know something I don't or can't - for instance a big break on a green - or very occasionally a comment on a player's technique from an ex-player. For the rest you'll do better watching with the sound off, believe me !.

Golf Channel has nothing as remotely interesting as the BBC. You get added value with Ken Brown, Peter Alliss and Andrew Cotter...

Peter: "Meanwhile at the 11th.... see how they cut the fairways! They go into the rough and then they come out again.... It's so easy to make a straight line which makes it very boring. Just make a little manoeuvre with the tractor and the trailer and the cutters and you can make even a dull bit of ground more attractive...... plant a bit of gorse.... a few bumps.....

Ken: "You're an old romantic, Peter.."

Peter: "Here everywhere you look there's a little bit of magic.... a bit of wildlife, noise, colour, sounds, birds..... it's glorious!!"

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned their talking about Brooke Henderson's sister, Brittany, being a pretty good professional golfer herself. I don't watch a lot of LPGA golf, but I've heard that mentioned in coverage at least 5 times over the past season. If she was good enough to mention, wouldn't someone be carrying her bag?

Irony I presume....

 

Tom is about facts, facts and more facts. That's OK if you need facts. But commentary is about helping us to understand what's going on, not just confirm what's going on.

 

Good commentators need more of a world view to help us understand. They challenge our perceptions and assumptions and help us reflect on what we see. They also amuse us if they have a sharp sense of humour, which most golf commentators unfortunately don't.
