Anyone still using a Garmin G6?

Recommended Posts

Looking at picking up a handheld GPS to go along with my slowly dying Bushnell rangefinder and have read nothing but great things about the G6 (minus a few minor nuances). Is anyone out there still using one or have you all moved onto something bigger and better?

Yes I have one, the unit has a good battery life, screen a little smaller that I expected and the details not 100% accurate on my club course but not a big issue. I bought it to supplement my Skycaddie Watch as I like the lay up distances on the G6 and the fact it shows the hole layout, which the watch doesn't. The other feature that works for me is to mark a position on the course, for instance we have a hole that is over a ridge so the approach is blind but by marking the crest if the ridge I know my distance to the top of the ridge from where I am

I have owned the g6 for 2 seasons now. I find it to be plenty accurate and the battery still lasts for 4+ rounds. The touchscreen isn't as sensitive as I would like but it works just fine for what it is.

I agree. Battery life is great. I often walk 27-36 holes and there is still 30-40% battery left.

I think I've had it for 2 full seasons now. Pretty happy with it.

Still very happy with it.

It gives me all the information I need, including club stats, and the measurements are always within a meter or two of the guys' I play with, who use lasers. Mind you, all the courses in my area have some sort of indication on the flags which tell you if the flag is front, middle or back, either colour or a small flag or sphere that is higher or lower on the flag stick. Combine this with the option to move the hole location in the green view with the G6, and I have all the information I need for my level of accuracy.

The battery is still going strong after more than two years of use. Three rounds without nedding to recharge are easily possible, sometimes even four.

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

I love my G6. Curious though, what were some of the "minor nuances"...?

People have complained about the touch screen a little here and there. I think that was the main issue from what I had read.

I've been using mine for 3+ years with no problems (assuming that you don't count the time that it quit working when I ran over it with a cart ;) ). I like being able to find distances by touching any point on the course, and also being able to move the pin location on the green. Distances agree very well with those from playing partners' lasers.

These days, I wouldn't pay too much for a GPS unless you really need to be "connected" to the outside world when you golf. If it has all the features that you need, it's a no brainer.

The best thing about the G6 is that it allows me to be "disconnected", when playing golf and still have a very accurate GPS. My mobile phone is always turned off completely, when I am on the course. I cherish that opportunity to be incommunicado. Therefore, stats apps or GPS golf apps are not an option for me.

Yes, I am over 50.

Yes, I am over 50.

The one thing I do wish it had was a Bluetooth sync capability with garmin connect. I hate having to take it out of my bag and plug it in via USB after every round to sync my stats.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
