Simulator Troubles

Does anyone else find that sims dont give you the same kind of results that you usually get on the course? Every shot i hit on the sim always cuts way right, when most of my shots on the course only have a light draw. My tee shots are the worst, and i find that when i try and hit my fairway woods on the sim, i can't seem to get underneath the shot, and give the ball any amount of launch, the same thing happens with my irons as well, although diminished. Does anyone else see these problems in the sims? Or maybe its just me?

Yes, I have found the same thing to be true on the majority of sims I have used.. One issue is that there's usually a good deal of wear on the mat, so you're basically hitting out of a divot. I've given up on good driver readings in them as well. Seems like it's the same as the fairway where it's low launch, high spin shots that don't seem to go anywhere.

I used a brand new one a couple weeks back and while the driver still seemed a bit shaky, the irons and wedges were exactly what I expected, outside of some odd spin readings. It helps to have hit on a better LM more recently to have a good idea of how your shots actually perform, and that makes it easier to take the numbers with a grain of salt.

the only time our numbers get really wonky or show incorrect readings are when the balls (the ones with lines on them) get really nicked up or people use regular golf balls -- it has a tough time reading them. luckily, our property manager picked up some really good 'premium' level balls that keep the markings longer.

we had one issue when our simulator needed calibration but - we knew it was broken and didn't put much trust into the fact everyone hit slices - regardless of aiming dead left lol

First off Welcome To The Wrx. This past year I have been at a half dozen sites and simulators. Four of the six were vastly different numbers. These are machines and calibrations need to be done regularly. I prefer to go live when testing equipment. The last time (except last summer @ G G) I hit a 10.5 degree driver over 300 was when Clinton was president.

Thanks for the welcome! Im glad to see that im not the only one that gets variations in their performance from a simulator.

Which simulator?

I have a GC2 LM / sim which measures spin. Most do not measure spin well. I had tested both GC2 and Trackman indoors at the house and both were the same regarding spin. For GC2 you need to watch the bulb - as it wears if not replaced then the spin numbers are not as accurate. Also use clean balls.

Having said that we basically sit on the fitting range. shots are accurate with spin for indoors. I would stay away from the simulator courses though. Wasted a bunch of money on them. The best are still very gamey and don't do anything for your real game.

I also have a GC2 and echo thepinkbomber's position. The sim is as good as the hardware and the calibration.

However, many people have trouble with "sim swings" where they do not make the same swing in a enclosed space as they do outside. This is generally the culprit for shorter swings assuming the user does not have an ego that is falsely inflated. I have seen people cut shots more indoors because they feel weird doing a full release indoors.

Some of the entertainment themed sims don't do a very good job of measuring all the ball flight parameters - particularly spin. The ones I play on only the starting line seems to be used. Anything that starts right fades or slices, anything that starts left draws or hooks. So it really messes with folks who are used to starting it one way and expecting it to come back. Not sure but I think it's an older FullSwing simulator with only the infrared ball tracking and doesn't have the overhead cameras to measure spin.
