How do you figure putts per round? I hear a lot of people saying that they need to avg 27-30 per round?

mcca

Once you play a stroke from the putting green you start counting. You don't count putts from the fringe. You start with your first stroke from the putting green and don't stop counting until the ball hits the bottom of the cup. Do that every hole. Add up the numbers at the end. That's your total putts per round. If you divide by 18, you get your Putts per green. If you just use the numbers from the holes you hit the green in regulation and divide by that number, there is your putts per green in regulation.

...pretty basic.

I have found a lot of Guys with lower Putts per round miss the green on their approach shots. They chip it close and one Putt.

The guys with more GIR's have a few more Putts per round... usually have longer Putts when finding the Green from 150yards instead of the fringe.

IMO

Yeah if you're hitting a lot of greens, look at your PPGIR with more weight than just PPG.

You really need to look at both and compare. Maybe you're not hitting a lot of greens but when you are you're butchering it...or maybe it's the other way around (like it is for me). When I miss a green, it gets ugly.

9 greens in regulation yesterday, 35 putts, shot 82. I am a poor putter, 35 putts is good for me.

My friend had 3-4 less putts than me, but just as other said, he hit fewer GIR, so he was chipping close from the fringe a lot. (He had a similar score)

I use to think I was a descent putter until I started actually counting my strokes on the green. Keeping track of your various stats is a great way to find out where you need work.

Welcome to my life Mark, can't buy to many putts at the moment that will lip the hole and drop. Saying that, I putted pretty well on Saturday in our Club Champs. 32 putts, 9 GIR, could have been a lot less but my short game is still lacking and I'm not exactly happy with it at the moment. When I'm hitting GIR I've been getting it alright - my P/GIR is around 1.78 and you can see what my average is at the moment for total. I want to get it back down to 28-30 putts per round instead of 31-32 as that's what it should be with only 8/9 Greens a round. Oh well - perfect practice makes perfect

I had 36 putts today but that's not counting 3 putts from the fringe. I had four putts stop on the lip on the front nine... :russian_roulette: and shot 85.

It's hard not to go into the what ifs. Like "if those four putts dropped an I didn't three putt three times I would've shot 78".

lol, i know the feeling. i shot a rough 77 the other day with 5 lip outs from inside 8 feet on the front nine alone!

i average about 35 PPR myself... never done better than 32, but have been up above 40 a few times... :russian_roulette:

i tend to have more putts if i hit GIR's... if i'm chipping i can usually drop it in one...

i still 3 putt at least twice a round... last week i had 2 eagle putts, that turned into pars... :clapping:

i average about 33 ppr. granted, some of my best putting rounds ahve came with a bunch of close chips and a one putt, but a good day of putting for me would be NO 3 putts. one bad day, i had 39 putts, but my best is 31.

I find that when my long game is on, my PPR goes up a little. The average first putt for greens hit in regulation is 20 feet. Some shorter than that, some longer. If I miss a few greens, my PPR goes down a little. If I hit about half the greens, that generally gives me a good figure for an average, detailed stats aside.

It really stings when you realise that you're ball striking is single-digit standard but crappy putting makes you a low teen handicapper. :aggressive:

That's the case with me. I shot an 89 last time out with only 28 putts. But I hit two GIR. I just scrambled and hit it close to the hole most times. But all my putts were for par or bogey. :aggressive:

S'okay, though, I know that I need to really work on my driving accuracy ands approach shots. Putting a short game are fine right now.

I do track my putts per round but I pretty much analyze things that day and do not enter into any stat tracker or anything. I have had in the mid-20s but average low 30s. However, as others have mentioned, I am usually 50% at BEST on GIR, so take the putting figures with a grain of salt. On a bad day, I will have maybe 1 or 2 three putts but usually I can avoid them.

Currently, I am completing a swing change and am having trouble dialling in my wedge yardages. I seem to be hitting everything pretty long these days so it is a matter of figuring out what my new numbers are. I used to lick my chops when inside 125, now I am just hoping to be within 30 feet after my shot.

With my not-so-stellar GIR stats, my putting should be better but I am only about 50% on up-and-down from greenside.

A month ago, I shot a 40 on the front nine, including a double bogey (after sitting in the middle of the fairway with a 6-iron in my hand from 175 - don't ask), then turned around and hit 7 of 9 greens on the back and shot a 3 under 33. Amazing what some GIRs will do for you. I had 13 putts on the back with 4 birdies (5 in total for the round - which was 3 more than my previous best). Front nine, I could not buy a putt, even after only having 3 GIR, hence the 40 after 15 putts. Granted that on the back, my putter was pretty hot as I was making putts I would not normally make but hey, that's golf. Do not ask questions when things are going right. I tried hard not to think about what was working for me as that would have meant certain death to my round. I just kept going. As an 8 handicap, a 73 does not come around every day. I had other putts that were painfully close without dropping so the golf gods were on my side ovaerall, balancing the good and the bad.

I always just ask which side of me is showing up on the tee......the long game or the short game. If I hiot em long and straight, my approaches and putting may not be great. If my logn game is off, maybe my short game is good. Ah, the mysteries of golf!
