reached the end of 5 weeks. baseline numbers are definitely coming up, and so is the top end.

hit 140 for the first time with the red stick, so that was cool.

kind of a bummer today though as i caught the ground with my first lefty step change swing with the red stick and it exploded lol.

can’t wait to move to level 2, but it’s gonna be a few days until the new red stick shows up.

Did a Taylormade driver fitting today outdoors on trackman. Hit about 35-40 drivers and my average was 110 mph. I hit a few at 112 and 113.6 was my highest. I wasn’t swinging my best but pretty thrilled to get outside on trackman and know that my legit SS is 110+.

For reference my personal bests are:

Green 131

Blue 125

Red 119

Got up to 114 green today. I mentioned a while back that after my session I rip a dozen 2i driving iron shots into the net off a tee.

I started that about 4-5 weeks back at 89mph top speed with that 2i.

I knew I could get it when I hit 94 right off the rip and 2nd to last ball I got it.

140 with red stick is bomber man.  That is my most recent record as well, albeit with the old swing speed radar.  140 club though!

thanks man.

i think the success people have with speed sticks falls into two camps

1.  you need to actually build up the strength required to move the golf club faster.

2. you’re plenty strong and need to figure out how to unlock the speed your body is already capable of

i know i fall into the second category. the work with the sticks so far has led to speed increases through the bag (110mph 7i, what?!) with every club even though i know i haven’t gotten any stronger or more flexible.

I really wonder if what I'm experiencing is normal... I had gotten as high as 130-131 with the green stick for like 3 weeks in a row last month.  Now I can't get it higher than 126-127.  I've been very consistent with training, even taking some days off from weight training to make sure I'm fresh.  I'm 17 weeks in and the interesting part is I'm getting more consistent with actual driver swings hitting a ball.  Lately I'm averaging around 112-113 hitting balls which is awesome but for the life of me can't understand why my stick speeds have gotten lower from my max's.  Even when I try to get out of control for the highest possible speeds I just can't get there. Part of me just wonders if the fun and excitement has worn off.  I used to feel very amped at times every once in awhile feel some adrenaline.  I don't get hyped like I used to.  I wonder if it all still works out in the end?  It's not like we have that kind of feeling when playing golf... Just wondering if I've reached my limit.  I really really want to be cruising at like 114 or more and that would require a couple more mph across the board which I just haven't seen in a while in my training sessions.  Kind of annoying.

same exact thing is happening to me. I was progressing nicely and then bam - a drop of 5ish mph per club, per swing. My driver CHS has dropped too. I was cruising at 110 and now am struggling to hit 108. Living between 105-107.

Has anyone experienced a drop during protocol 4?  I really think the "sprint" swings zap my energy before the max out set at the end.  Lately my first set of normal swings are almost the same as my max out.  Prior to protocol 4 my max out swings were almost always 3-4 mph faster at the end than my normal swings at the beginning.  Right now sitting at like 4 mph slower on my max's than a couple months ago.  Don't really understand why when I've been super dedicated and giving it my all every session but I guess it is what it is.

Went to get a few grips at the store and hit a few used drivers. I was happily surprised to start right out at 98-99. Then with a pretty smooth swing, full turn I hit it dead up the middle and look up to see 104. My previous high was 102 at a demo fitting.

Also yesterday hitting some 6i into my net I really got that smooth turn going and got my 6i up to 90mph.. That's a big jump from around 79-81 where I was before.

Completely done trying to see trends. Today was the weirdest day yet. Slowest swings with blue and red since almost week 1. Fastest average driver swings hitting a ball ever. I started hitting 5-10 balls at the end of my sessions a couple weeks ago (sometimes throwing out anomalies) and averaging them out. It’s been strangely informative. No idea why I’m getting slower with sticks and faster hitting balls with driver.

Not really. If you are getting zapped you need more rest in between.

so i think i have to take a break from speed training during the golf season and get back to it next offseason.

while i’ve seen some nice jumps in speed, it has caused an extreme out-in path that i didn’t have before. i’m talking 10-11* from the outside.

i went for a driver fitting friday and while it was nice to see “gamer” type swings up in the 130mph range, contact was brutal and everything was high block fade and slice city.

so i’m thinking maybe i just go on the maintenance protocol during the season and get back to pushing speed in the winter.

any thoughts?

Man that sucks. If I were you I’d try to continue the speed training or at least doing it in maintenance but somehow add some sort of visual aid to promote an inside out swing. Maybe a couple of alignment sticks flat on the ground around the ball line but pointed right of target.  Or a yoga block outside the ball line like Fleetwood? I think there’s a creative way you can keep the training going but change your path. It’ll probably impact your speeds but that’s not really important right now.  I know for me at like 5 months in I wouldn’t abandon ship after all this work. I’d try my best to keep going with a different intention and some sort of aid to promote the path I want.

yeah that’s not a bad idea at all.

to be honest, it’s probably a drill i should be doing anyway, since i’ve always fought a slight out-in path that carried over from playing baseball. it was just never anywhere near 10+ degrees left though.

thanks for the tip!

I had to quit speed training for a while when some really awful moves crept their way into my swing. I went from a 2HC to a 6HC. I plan to take it up again, but use a more realistic swing. I am a big believer in incorporating some speed work at the range into an overall speed program.

sorry to hear that!

weirdly enough, it hasn’t crept into my on course swing. i’ve been driving the ball really well early in the season this year.

it seems like on the course i can identify a good target and “aim small miss small”. that target is always towards the right side of the fairway and off in the distance, and the shot in my head starts there and falls left.

at my fitting the other day, it was outdoors, but there was no real backdrop to hit towards. the range backed up to a large warehouse and all that was facing me was a huge brick wall.

Oddly very slow today. I only hit 105 green stick. After I hit some balls in the net and my driver was only 95 but my 2i hit 97.

No big deal. In my league last Wed. all 4 of us nailed drives downwind on a par 5. I ended up a solid 15yds. ahead and had 209 front into the hole listed as 545 but tees up, downwind. Yardages aside I'm definitely able to get at more of these par 5's as well as get more agressive on shorter par 4's.

That is how I have been after an off-season of speed work. Maxed out at 120. Last season was hitting straight or draws and now it’s power fades. It’s like all my hard work last year (and money on lessons) is gone to waste. I am consciously thinking externally now to do the nail drill and trying to release my arms.

I had a slight drop back to 112 green from 116 previously the other day. Yesterday though I took my prgr to the range and wow. I got to a big milestone.

When I first started I was at 97top speed and most of my drives were around 94-95. My first goal was 100mph. and I hit that over the winter.

Next big one, 105. I thought that was a long way off and might be unrealistic for this 47yr. old body... Don't underestimate yourself.

Sup guys, thought I'd check in.  I am currently in protocol 5 and have about 3 weeks left in the entire program.  I started back in december and outside of one week off earlier in the spring, I have been super consistent in my training.  3 days a week, every week for almost 6 months when I do finish.  Today will be my 70th session.  What i can see from my data is that the biggest jump definitely came in the very first protocol, however I didn't have a lot of consistency until the 2nd and 3rd protocols.  Earlier I had more days where speeds varied by 2-3 mph across the board.  I logged my HIGHEST speeds around protocol 3 and then had a crazy drop off in protocol 4 that has remained until this day.  About 4-5 mph slower than where I was.  I THINK... at some point in the spring I transitioned from a crazy out of control speed focus swing during my sessions to my normal golf swing.  Right around that time the weather was changing and i was able to get on the course and ball flight was more of a concern than speed.  Through protocol 4 and now 5 I still swing as hard as I possibly can, but it's with a real on course swing.  My numbers now are very consistent with the sticks.  I'm within 1 mph on all sticks on most days.  On the other hand I also think that it's quite possible that my body is just overloaded and ready for a reset/break.  I also have worked out intensely at the gym like 4-5 days a week, which has overlapped my speed training a lot.

With all that said, I started the program with a max driver swing on course around 104 and about a 255-260 carry.  My average driver swing on course now is 111 and sometimes I can peak to 112-113.  I'm carrying it about 275-80 now so a distance gain of about 25 yards.  Total distance is pretty consistent on good swings around 295-300 on course.

I'm very much ready to finish and then back off a bit into a maintenance mode.  Definitely will not stop training completely but I think I need a break from the frequency and reps.  I am very much interested what happens when I back off the gym a little and switch things up with the speed training.

speed training is definitely paying off.

this is from a recent fitting. i was at a smooth, controlled 130mph the whole session.

125 max with green yesterday.  2 months ago I was hitting 130-131 every session.  Struggled to keep my driver hits over 110 when I was peaking near 115 previously.

The more I think about it I'm starting to believe I'm overtraining a bit.  Be cautious of doing these protocols while also lifting and doing cardio rigorously. Luckily I've not experience any injuries but I do feel like my lack of recovery from one workout to the next is an issue.  It's the only real reason why my speeds are down 5mph from my peaks a couple of months ago.  I really don't think it's a technique thing as I'm playing some of my best golf ever right now on the course.  With that said I do still believe that once I take a break my speeds will jump back up.  The fact that I'm still +6 or +7 at times over my beginning speed while my nervous system is fried is still really impressive.  Going to take a week off here shortly and I'm going to scale back my gym workouts from 4-5 days a week to 2 days and I'll probably do 2 days of speed training of a max of maybe 36-40 swings per session for the summer and see what happens.

Loving it. I matched my max at 116 green several times this morning. Thought I might squeeze out a couple more but that was it for today.

On the course on a shorter track with my kid this afternoon the rubber met the road.

My SwingU gps said 303yds on this hole. I had 19yds. left at the ball. I hopped my pitch shot off the stick, so close to a big bird but a tap in birdie.

This is why I committed to the workouts and speed training. So awesome to be able to see the results out on the course. It's like when I was a kid doing "Plyometrics, Russian Jump Training" I bought for $9.95 out of the back of Basketball Digest and after almost 2 years I was dunking a basketball.

Anyway. Pic of hole and me being goofy with my boy.

Made a big decision to stop following protocol 5.  Going to also make some changes to my schedule and volume.  I found the happy gilmore swings to be useless anyways.  I feel like they were just thrown in there b/c they ran out of ideas.  I like the double step, step change, and even the wind up drills much better.  Not to mention I've been doing kneeling swings the entire time.  Also, I've decided to decrease my lifts for the summer.  5 days a week of lifting in the AM and speed training in the afternoons was not the recipe for success.  Saw huge gains in the first 3 protocols and then drop off (but still well above starting speeds), in the last 2 months.  I know I should have been doing my speed training before lifts but it wasn't an option.  So I'm actually going to do lifts 2x a week and speed training 2x a week for the next 2 months and see what happens.  So far this week it's been good.  My top speed today was the highest it's been in just about 2 months.  Recovery and timing of these speed training workouts is really important....

Summer Schedule:

Monday: Speed Training Only

Tuesday:  Total Body Lift

Wednesday:  RECOVERY

Thursday:  Speed Training Only

Friday:  Total Body Lift

Weekend:  Recovery, on course
