Rants and Raves...

Recommended Posts

I will try to one up you...

Saturday my wife and I were out for a round at a nice par 70 course in Boca Raton. We were paired with a nice gentleman of around our age and teed off on the first hole. As my wife was hitting the staff brought out a 4th player for our group. Now it became apparent quite quickly that this gentleman's game was not only well behind the other gentleman's and mine but also well behind my wife's who has only been playing about 9 months. Ok, I can live with that. What I can't live with was... his constant loud jabbering while someone was ready to swing, his driving the cart almost onto the green, his lost balls that HAD TO Be FOUND! When they were found he didn't have a club in his hand ready to hit said ball. When he did have a club in his hand it was the wrong one necessitating a walk back to the cart to change the club. Five or more practice swings per shot, which obviously wasn't helping. At hole seven I told his playing partner that I was either going to duct tape him to a tree and leave him for the Rangers to find or bury him in a sand trap. At 8 his playing partner told us he was bailing after 9 holes and wanted to make sure we understood that he had enjoyed his time WITH US. I hurried my wife at 9 and we left the hole before he struck his first (of many I'm sure) putts. I then took off for 10 and didn't look back. My wife and I playing were able to keep a 2 to 3 hole lead on him even as we caught and had to wait on players in front of us.

I have no issue with poor golfing per say. Although I usually G.O.L.F. there are times that I F.L.O.G. I have major issues with people who do not know, understand, or practice good Golf Etiquette. I truly believe that everyone should have to pass some kind of basic competency course and be certified before being allowed on a golf course!

Now, how's that for a Rant!?!

Now, how's that for a Rant!?!

:scenic:

Not bad.

Why the h*ll doesn't anyone rake a bunker anymore?! I mean jeez! We had a family BBQ yesterday; my wife's cousin is a Superintendent at a 27 hole course and confirmed my complaint. Not only do they not rake bunkers, but they don't fix ball marks or replace divots, even the beaver pelt variety. I want to scream!!!!

Saturday we went to a football game -- CFL variety. We tailgate before the game with a group. It's a good time. We go to the game and there's a bunch of twenty somethings in the row behind us. All game long they jabber on at the top of their lungs about chicken shwarma, vegan restaurants, weddings, relationships, you name it! How do you enjoy watching a football game when you are being subjected to a live version of Big Brother? Just WTF are these clowns doing at a football game because it's obvious they don't have the slightest interest in what's going on?!

Back to the family BBQ. Why do people order food and then not eat it? I cook the exact number of burgers and sausages that were requested and I have 2 leftover burgers and 3 leftover sausages. If you don't like how I cook then don't bloody well come! This has happened time and time again and we always seem to get hung with everyone's potluck leftovers. I just pitch it now...

Raised and called! ;)

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

<snip> ...they don't fix ball marks or replace divots, even the beaver pelt variety. I want to scream!!!!

True that! I came across one of the "divots" left by the millennials in front of us on Sunday. It wasn't actually a divot, but a 3-4" deep (75-100mm) hole with the flap of grass still attached. I could tell it was fresh. I could also tell that the perp had no idea how to hit a wedge. This thing looked like the guy used a shovel on it. Fix it? Yes I did. Why? Because I happen to like this course and I play it every week, not as an excuse to race around in carts and get drunk, but to work on my game.

People like that should stay home and play video golf. Put raking bunkers and fixing divots on the competency test, along with keeping your pie hole shut (or at least learn the "golf whisper"). Oh, and when you sink a putt, act like you've done it before, not like you just won the PGA Championship.

:Things that bug me while playing golf:

Our normal quiet Sunday afternoon round was interrupted by a foursome in golf carts. These were all twenty-somethings who NEVER STOPPED TALKING AND YELLING BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN THEMSELVES. I have never heard so much nonsense chattered in my life. They had no respect, or even awareness, of people playing within earshot on every hole we encountered them on. Plus the fact that these were all healthy looking guys in their twenties.

I wanted to yell at them: GET YOUR A@@SES OUT OF THOSE CARTS AND WALK YOU IDIOTS!, but my playing partner stopped me.

What is it with young people riding in golf carts anyway? Apparently they can't conceive of golf without the driving experience. Thankfully they weren't playing music. Of course, they wouldn't have heard it anyway, what with all of the jabbering going on.

I have no problem if people want to ride in a cart, provided they are respectful of other's on the course. But these guys were just idiots. The drove on front of us when we were hitting our tee shots (should'a aimed at them) and were just loud and obnoxious. If I had done that when I was a kid, my dad would have belted me.

So what do you guys (and gal) think about this?

I find it ridiculous myself as the LPGA has gone out of it's way to promote these women more on their looks than their talent...

The BBC appears to have hit an all time low.

I refuse to pay for Sky on the basis that I will not knowingly support criminals but having watched the last two days play of the Open Championship via BBC highlights programmes I can fully understand why people are prepared to pay silly money to watch a national sporting event that should be free to view.

Hazel Irvine has retired but has been replaced by yet another Scotswoman who babbles in such a thick accent that she is virtually unintelligible, there is already the resident idiot Jock in the form of Andrew Cotter who shares a pathetic line in schoolboy humour with Ken Brown, plenty of private jokes and titters and of course the outdated meanderings of Peter Alliss whose tutor Henry Longhurst spoke only when there was something worth describing.

Iain Carter who is the BBC website golf correspondent is at Birkdale working for Radio 5 Live, following Jordan Spieth's game he appeared briefly to inform viewers that the 'club differential' between playing downwind as opposed to into the wind 'could be four or five clubs'.

Pure genius.

I can only assume that he was educated somewhere similar to his colleague Eilidh Barbour the new linkperson who earned(?) a degree in Film and Media at Stirling University,an academic establishment that for many years was a council run leisure centre until the education boom turned such facilities into seats of learning.

The BBC used to be known for its correct use and pronunciation of the English language and for the quality of its productions across the board, drama, sport, news, documentaries.

Now it's celebs, soaps and soccer and following the revelations about the ridiculous salaries paid to so-called stars and executives I might just consider spending a few quid with the old Aussie swagman.

I was inaccurate in my description of Stirling University which was actually a maternity hospital until 1968.

It reminds me of the young lady I knew who told me that she was a student in York,I told her that an old friend had been at York University, she said 'No,not York Uni but St John's College'.

She also did Film,Media and TV and is now an estate agent.

I was with her in the Student Union one evening having just seen 'Saving Private Ryan' and commented to the group that the opening scenes must have been a pretty realistic representation of the Omaha Beach landings on D Day.

Blank looks all round.

'D Day.....invasion of Europe 1944??..Anyone??'

Nope.

Clueless.

And these were university students.

I just checked the BBC website for an update on the Open to read of Grace's extraordinary 62 and how his shot on one hole was dropping over the pin 'onto the top deck about 15 foot away'.

Is that a size 15 foot away or do you mean 15 FEET away you ignorant muppet?

I cannot understand those people who list an item for sale on ebay and limit it to 'local collection only'.

What, just what is the bloody point of listing something that can be seen globally and refusing to post or ship it?

Why not stick it the local paper?

I had spotted a nice retro carry bag and emailed the seller to say I would like to bid and would be willing to pay all p&p costs if they would post it (they are 350 miles from where I live),his reply pointed out that the costs of posting would be more than the value of the bag and that I should look more locally!

The bag will remain unsold and they won't understand why.

The seller is assuming he's going to get stiffed on shipping or worse. It has probably happened before. We all know how eBay is almost always on the buyer's side no matter how ridiculous the claim. But you're right, may as well just put the bag on CL with that attitude!

And this is why I use craigslist instead of DuhBay to sell my used clubs. Yes, shipping is a hassle and expensive for heavier items like golf clubs. Know your market.

So I go to the thrift store on a half day of vacation on Monday and what do I find? A Dunlop ALTA driver with the following marked on the tag:

"Retail value $120!" (handwritten) and the price?$30

Now back in the day, when these things were new, they sold at K-Mart & Fleet Farm for $29.95. Here we are about 30 years later, and some rube who thinks they are an expert in evaluating golf clubs thinks that club has not lost ANY value. You should have seen it. They didn't even bother to CLEAN IT! The thing was all beat up, chips everywhere, and it looked like someone had used it to hit rocks with.

I had one back in the day, and it wasn't a bad club. Today it's worth, at best $1. Not $30. All of their drivers have similar stickers on them. Someone has taken to the INTERNET and fancies themselves as an expert, and has over priced all of their clubs. Memo: ITS A THRIFT STORE YOU @#$%^&**&^%$#@!

Feel your frustration. We have a similar "expert" culling and pricing clubs at one of my local thrift haunts. He knows so much that he threw away a 53 commemorative Hogan persimmon with great grain. It's now in a bag in my garage.

You mean they sold golf clubs at Mills Farm and Fleet? I never saw that but then again it has been at least 25 years since I have been in the Midwest. When I was trucking I ran up there a lot so I needed good winter clothes especially boots and coveralls. The coveralls you could buy in the Midwest were better insulated than the ones you could buy down south. I am a equipment and hardware junkie and I loved those Mills Farm and Fleet stores. I also used to buy some of the hardware I used on the truck there like chains binders and shackles. I could blow $500 in the drop of a hat there

Yeah, they used to have a very nice golf supply section, then they got sold and it all went to heck. Can't find anything, and all they have is junk now. Used to be a good store, but....

The local Goodwill has stuff marked up ridiculously, too. Used to be able to get a nice iron for $2, and a wood for $3. I haven't gone there for a while, but last time, they had an old, beat up Warbird driver at $29.95.

[End of rant]

You mean they sold golf clubs at Mills Farm and Fleet? I never saw that but then again it has been at least 25 years since I have been in the Midwest. When I was trucking I ran up there a lot so I needed good winter clothes especially boots and coveralls. The coveralls you could buy in the Midwest were better insulated than the ones you could buy down south. I am a equipment and hardware junkie and I loved those Mills Farm and Fleet stores. I also used to buy some of the hardware I used on the truck there like chains binders and shackles. I could blow $500 in the drop of a hat there

The ones in northern Illinois are now called Blain's Farm & Fleet.

Like I said it has been at least 25 years since I have been to the Midwest. I never went to one in Illinois always went to the ones in Wisconsin or Minnesota. We have sorta a half Word not alloweded version down south called Tractor Supply but it is nothing compared to the Midwestern Farm and Fleet stores that I remembered. Yep I thought I had seen some farmers in Eastern NC growing up (my grandparents were tobacco farmers) but when I went to the Midwest the first time I was WOW! now these are some FARMERS! Wow! what equipment!! A few years later I was hauling some of the equipment from all the major factories. Even hauled Steiger tractors from out of Indiana. Never knew what a Minnepolis- Moline tractor was until then. Never ever saw those down South. Actually my wife and I were temporarly assigned to the Midwestern Farm Fleet for a while hauled out of the quad cities in Illinois and Deere in Waterloo Iowa. Actually the winter of 90 we rented a house in Walcott Iowa and based out of there for 4 months. We basically ran Illinois, Iowa and Indiana and were at our temporary home every night and off on weekends. It was too damn cold to do much but we did buy a POS car and got out some on the weekends. One night that old farm house got so cold we said screw it and fired off the Kenworth tractor and generator and slept real warm in it. But looking back that was a fun winter even with the cold

Small world. I grew up not too far from Walcott.
