Rants and Raves...

Recommended Posts

Welcome back Tim, good to see a post from you again. Was wondering how you've been. Hope you're feeling better.

First thing that struck me when I originally read Davis' comments about "to much distance is making golf more expensive for everyone" was what a load of B.S. Certainly wasn't noticing it at my lowly level of participation. If the USGA needs to limit ball distance, so be it. Makes no difference to me and how I go about participating. Just make sure you leave the 99.5% of us in the real golf world alone.

Don't want less distance, like to find more of it. Particularly as I realize less with every passing day.

One of the reasons I'm going back to old school clubs is because it gives me more opportunity to use all the clubs in my bag.

I'm not a long hitter by any means but at my course of 6317 yards and a par of 72 using new clubs and balls (even then not really "new", a Titleist 909 driver and a Mizuno MP001 3 wood) and assuming I get the ball away okay, my second shots on par fours would typically be:

8 iron

7 iron

Wedge

long chip

7 iron

3 wood (478 yards)

6 iron

Hybrid

Sand wedge

Sand wedge

On the four par fives, barring an error, I'm hitting no more than an 8 iron for my third, typically 9 or less.

So for the 14 approach shots I'm hitting one hybrid and one 3 wood, everything else is 6 iron or less. Bringing the ball back would be good for all of us in my rose tinted view but it will never happen because Average Joe golfer is obsessed with distance.

So next year I intend to play the whole season using 1980s or earlier clubs, including qualifiers, it'll be interesting!

It's not all about the score.

I believe it very much depends on the length of the course as you say. Now without question you'd be hitting well past me but I still can't see myself playing my Ping G10's on an Executive Course! My Wife and I can't afford the Championship Courses during the Winter "On Season" down here so we play either the Colony West Glades Course in Tamarac FL of just over 4100 yards or Lakeview in Delray Beach FL which is just over 3000 yards. I have committed to playing my 73-75 Wilson Staff with Persimmons for the season and my Wife Sally has now fallen in love with her new old set of Power/Bilt Levelumes with matching Persimmons and has enthusiastically joined me in playing Vintage! Having said that we will go back to playing modern clubs for the most part when the rates drop and we are playing longer courses again.

I didn't play much vintage this past season. So by default I'm playing modern clubs on short courses because that's where I typically play. Having said that, I don't hit a lot of drivers; maybe three a side depending upon the hole and where the trouble is located or to give myself a full swing coming in on a par 5. So you can see that those courses do lend themselves quite nicely to vintage play which I've done a fair bit of in the past. I guess you could say that my goal is to keep the experience fairly similar regardless of what I have in my hands or I'm simply applying that which I learned from playing older clubs to the modern game. ;)

I occasionally venture over to the "Dark side", (outside this forum) and into parts unknown where all the "Mr. Know-it-all's" and supposed "real men" of GolfWRX hang out and post some of the most ridiculous comments and beliefs on the internet. Some of those people are 1 straw shy of breaking the camel's back in every thread and every post. It is amazing how much anger, hatred and evil demeanor that some of them spew out just because they are hiding behind a keyboard and desktop/laptop. Since so many of their threads get locked up quickly, you would think it would be embarrassing to them to say the least.

Typical Other Side WRX Post...

Shot a casual round today. Driver was a little shorter than normal as I was only hitting it 400 yards.

However scoring was good as I was 20 under for the round...

Too Much Testosterone and Too Few Brain Cells.

I look over there on rare occasions just to give myself a laugh.

The anger and viciousness there sicken me though.

Sadly, I am afraid it is just a reflection of today's society.

Ugh...I took a stroll over there last week, ducked into a rules thread and received my first official "warning" for of all things....AGREEING with someone! How silly of me. So anyway...my account was locked up for a couple days because of that nonsense. Learned my lesson, no more for me. I'll just hang out with you whackos and loonies.

I shot a casual round this morning. Started off at sunrise, around 6:00 am. Barely enough light to see, but I eagled the first three holes. Sadly I forgot to bring my favorite clubs, but fortunately I found a pristine 3 wood in a bush by the first tee. It was hickory shafted to boot, so good luck for me. Then I proceeded to find more clubs as the round went on. Someone before me must have had a hole in his golf bag, because there were tees, golf balls, and money strewn all over the course. Played the next three hole with just a putter and was 12 under. Nice start to the day.

I stumbled a bit on the next three holes, as the snow was getting a little deep. I had to abandon my pull cart at the turn, but I pressed on. I was now only 15 under. The next five holes were magnificent. All doglegs, I drove them all to within 5 yards of the green. Chipped in and moved to 25 under. The last four holes saw me let up on the gas a little as I didn't want to embarrass myself by playing too well. So I self imposed a one club rule and finished the round with a one Iron. In order to further handicap my amazing golf prowess, I took my shirt off in spite of the fact that it was only 3 degrees out with a minus 15 wind chill.

And, in spite of beating off the women (who were attracted by my amazing 9 pack abs) with my remaining clubs, I still finished at 33 under par.

It was, quite possibly, the second best round of my life. After a quick outdoor shower, I hopped into my vette and headed off to work. What a round!

And then the alarm went off.....

And, with the exception of the hickory 3 wood you found, everything else was JDM, SC, or PXG.

Glad you got on so well with "the new" traditional equipment.

But, what is REALLY important, and what I need to know...did you use your staff bag, and what ball did you use?

Staff bag: Yes, I found one in the parking lot that looked like it was an old Arnold Palmer Ryder Cup staff bag. Not sure of the year.

Golf Ball: Titelist experimental Pro V 1X100-345983 Stamped "TW"

I would have taken pictures, but my Leica 35mm film camera, 0-series, was in the shop...

This past season, I didn't play old stuff much, unless you consider my "new" TA 845's I bought earlier this Spring. I've been playing an R11s driver and 3W most of the season, too. Vintage? I guess in today's golf world.

Just didn't play the Haigs, Hagen pyratones, and hickories as much as other years.

I don't know why.

I think that's part of the fun of what we do though. Because (most of us) aren't playing a $5,000 set of clubs we have multiple options. Which set do I feel like playing today? Sometimes I get in a groove with one particular set and ride it out. Other times I will play 4 different sets in a 2 week period. Play what's working for you and what you feel like playing!

That's how I approach it for the most part; use a set for several games in a row until something begs a change. I probably played half my rounds in 2016 with a set of Eye 2 clones and old BB War bird woods. This past season, they only came out once or twice, but I did have an extended run with my PB Citation laminates and GR Axial Tour Grinds. Strangely enough (or not so much) the bulk of my games were played using a mash-up of newer and older moderns clubs centered around a set of Hogan Apex Plus irons. At least I looked like I had game! ;)

Spent lunch skimming the “Full Circle” thread over “there.” A bit of a nasty edge among the various combatants. I wouldn’t dare post a word there re my affection for blades. Gonna stick to this side where this game we love doesn’t resemble a WWE cage event.

Oh Yea?

After 5-10 decades of not trying every high end players club on the market (Because I'm not cheap, just terribly inexpensive...); PXG, Miura, Titliest, Callaway, Ping, and even Mizuno, I have finally landed at the very time saving, stroke gaining, and inexpensive conclusion that my 1968 Wilson K-28 thrift store blades are the best irons ever produced, period (followed by an actual period shown here) >>>.

Just curious if anyone else has had this epiphany? Because if I can save even one club ho's early in their career, then my life will have been worth every time consuming second. If you want the actual best feeling club out there, NOTHING matches a Wilson K-28 thrift store blade. Period, (just for emphasis).

Plus, the driver that I use, whittled from a tree branch with the perfect loft, (a tree that was struck by lightning the night my father died, which I carved painstakingly by hand & boned so it wouldn't chip, burned a lightning bolt in the shaft, nicknamed "ol' lightning", and once knocked the cover off of an entire dozen of Titelist Pro-v1X balls in a single round -- but I digress) is without a shadow of a doubt the absolute best driver for hitting dead straight 400 plus yard drives with, better than any Taylormade, Titelist, or whatever $600+ driver that anyone could ever buy anywhere. The only reason I am not on the PGA Tour is because I don't like to see grown men cry...
