Best Public Tracks in Williamsburg

Headed there on Vacation June 3-10 again, we alternate between there and Pigeon Forge, TN and just wondering what the Courses are like this time of year? The last time we were there I played Golden Horseshoe twice and enjoyed it very much...just looking for insight on other public courses and their conditions. Thanks all!

I would definitely recommend you trying to play over at Ford's Colony. The Blue Heron course there is probably the one that you would get to play on and it is a real fun course and was in great shape a couple weeks ago. Kiskiack is another one to check out. It's a fun layout, but I haven't been out there in a year so I don't know what kind of shape its in right now. I've never played them personally, but I've heard positive things about the 2 courses at Williamsburg National.

I played Royal New Kent recently. Really liked the course. Challenging links course and I was fortunate to stay out of the bunkers the entire round. I think I was a bit lucky since I played immediately following a storm that rolled through so I had the benefit of some favorable conditions. That said, I'd play it again even though I suspect it's tougher when dry. Heading down there in a couple of weeks, probably going to play Viniterra as I've heard some good things about it.

The LPGA just finished its event at Kingsmill River Course, so I would expect that to be in pretty good shape

I played all 3 courses at Kingsmill a few years ago, and I enjoyed the Woods Course the best. It's seperated from the other two, and we felt like we were the only ones on the course on a Wednesday. We played the River on Friday, and it was booked solid. We were the last tee time prior to them clearing the course for a shotgun tournament, and the starters started pushing us to get through 14 so they could start the tourney on about the 12th hole despite us waiting on every hole, and there being nowhere to go.

All 3 are in great condition. Also, I believe you have to stay there to play.

I've always enjoyed Kiskiack. Par 5 to start but really nice layout. Some of the holes are a little tight but for the most part it's a great track. Stonehouse is a tough track but interesting. They have always been touch and go with the greens because of the elevations. I have not been to Ford's Colony in a long while so I can't speak to that one. Brickshire is also another great track. Hoping to play that this summer. Royal New Kent is tough if your not finding fairways. Lots of blind shots and long. I worked at the Woods Course in Kingsmill for a few years so I'm partial to that one too.

Kingsmill River, Golden Horseshoe Gold and Green, Royal New Kent, Viniterra - all great courses. Kingsmill River and Golden Horseshoe Gold are two of my all time favorites.

I cant help with golf in Williamsburg, but just wanted to chime in with that area is one of my favorites to be in all of the USA. I have family up the road in Richmond and the area just speaks to me. 2 places I wish I had never left - Colorado and Virginia.

They are opening back up Golden Horseshoe Gold course this July after some renovations. Have yet to play it but heard good things.

I have personally played:

Royal New Kent- tough course with a lot of forced carries, I played here in a scramble in 30-40 degree weather back in December and it was near impossible.

Colonial Heritage, nice layout with well maintained greens

Kiskiack- nice track, not as challenging as the other Traditions course (Royal New Kent/Brickshire/Stonehouse),

Stonehouse- I'm playing there this sunday, will keep you posted.

If you have time drive out to Cape Charles and play Bay Creek- Palmer/Nicklaus courses out there are unmatched. Played there last summer. Great facility/course

Avoid Williamsburg National, they are under new management and it looks like the place is going under. I played there last summer for $10 during the weekday and figured out why the the green fees were so cheap... the upkeep is not there any more.

Hope this helps!

What are the general prices of the courses? Will be up there 4th of July week and going to try to sneak out. Can you get on with 1 and a rider for less than $50? If there are any, which would be the best?

Around $50 during the week. Add +/- $20 for Fri.Sat.Sun. Brickshire got expensive at some point. They get non-locals on a rack rate. Find a course you like and sign up for the local rewards card. Example-Brickshire Rack on Saturday is $99. Local with rewards card is $59.

Just played Stonehouse last weekend. Awful conditions. Avoid if you can.I think the greenskeepers are really slipping. The fairways were not cut well, tough to delineate first cut from fairway. Greens were mediocre. I think they are sinking money into Brickshire/Royal New Kent instead. Stay away from Stonehouse. That being said, some of the above mentioned courses are in great shape- Colonial heritage/Brickshire/Viniterra.

I am excited to play Golden Horsehoe gold course over july 4th weekend. It is finally open for play after a year of renovations. Should be a solid track!

Just finished playing Golden Horshoe- Gold course track yesterday afternoon. Beautiful conditions with immaculate greens. Tough, but fun. I definitely want a second crack at this course now that I know where I need to put the ball for scoring opportunities. Has a couple of nice almost island/elevation change par 3's as well.

Second this. $99 to play the fully-renovated Rtj course right in the heart of colonial Williamsburg was, for me, the bargain of a lifetime. Played last week. Greens and fairways were pristine. Tight course, fastest greens I've played on. I also played the green course which was also fantastic, if not quite as visually stunning.
