Stephan Jaeger's caddy using mysterious device

While watching this morning I noticed Jaeger's caddy standing in the fairway on hole 3. After referring to the yardage booklet he took something out of his right hand bib pocket. It was too small to see as he held it in his hand looking down at it. I couldn't figure out what it was.

Anyone else notice this, or know what it may be? He stared at for quite awhile.

Compass

I didn't see this, but I have to think this is the right answer.

I have seen only one other player do this. It was James Hahn, and coincidentally it was in a US Open qualifier. So, surprisingly, it is not a Rules violation. A decision before the 2014 season made it okay to use a compass (that does not measure distance, of course). There was a dustup when Matt Every was leading the Arnold Palmer Bay Hill Invitational that year and the tv audience saw his caddy looking at a device (that was only a compass, of course).

If it's a compass how does that help knowing what direction you're going? Especially today when there was no wind.

Compass could be useful when playing Bermuda greens (gotta know where South West is), but not much help with bent greens. Sure they are using if for judging wind direction.
