Titleist 718 AP2 and AP3 Irons: Shot at the 2017 Quicken Loans National

Recommended Posts

I would love to see offset as well. An AP3 3i and AP2 4-p could work if the AP 3 was 1* weak or the AP2 4 & 5i were each bent 1* strong. In stock lofts I would need an AP3 3i, t-Mb 4&5, then AP2 6-p to hit the loft gaps I am looking for and that sounds like a weird set. Need to hit all 3 and see how they actually gap out.

For those asking about the AP3 offset, I haven't seen any specs. There is a smidge more in the 7i that I tested on but absolutely nothing I couldn't play (ordered mine 1º weak which will removed a bit of offset) and the long irons DO have more offset, think between the AP1 and the AP2. Consumers have said that the name AP3 is stupid and doesn't fit the mold since this club fits between the AP1 and AP2, should be called the AP1.5 etc... It's actually pretty funny to think of it this was but the AP3 is the sum of AP1 and AP2 :)

The only Atmos shaft I saw for the hybrid was the Blue color. I hit it in the new hybrid and it felt great. The Tensei was offered in the White and the Blue. I went with the Blue in the 19º 818 H1. There may be more colors available in the Atmos but I have not seen a full spec sheet for shaft offerings. I'm sure they are ALL available for an upcharge!!!

I hate the AMT, I assume either DG X100 or KBS Tour will be available without and upcharge though... hoping anyway.

Exactly. How can standard DG not be offered stock?

Trying to get loft info on the AP3

Heard the wedge is 43 degrees!

Also heard they are stocking the AMT shaft, that is the lighter grams for longer clubs.....which didnt seem to go over very well

last year....curious.

There's couple images that shows 718 specs on page 9. Reply #251 & 269. Reply #277 above shows AMT shaft specs.

Yes, very strong lofts on those AP3 irons.

the graphic someone posted looks like they are also offering the s300 shafts too. did i read that wrong?

I think that is a reference to the flex and weight for each type of AMT. R, S and X. (link below).

https://truetemp.wpengine.com/products/dynamic-gold-amt-2/

I am sorry to see Titleist go with the AMT is the AP2. I have not seen a lot of acceptance by elite players for this shaft, but the AP2 seems to be targeting that type of player. Am I missing something?

I love the idea of the AMT Black. I like lighter weight iron shafts since my 6i is only around 83 with my 105g iron shaft, but I notice that sometimes my lower irons go SO high and the longer irons go a bit lower. I could imagine a set like the AMT Black helps keep the short irons in a controlled height and helps promote a higher flight in the long irons.

Not sure if I'll ever get them, but intuitively they make tons of sense to create a set like this.

1° weak at such a wide sole will probably make the club want to sit slightly closed ... would be interested to hear how that plays out for you once you have them

one of the things i dont like about titleist. "our stock shaft doesn't suit you? give us some extra cash and we'll find one that does"

I'd rather pay extra for the shaft I like than not have the option of getting that shaft at all

me personally I think the AMT is a great shaft and brings standard 7g weight incremented clubs much closer to MOI matched clubs

certainly not the perfect shaft for everybody ... but none would be ... so to me it is as good a choice for a stock shaft as any other reasonable one

and there will certainly again be a long list of custom shafts that are available at no additional charge

What is the solution? Offer every shaft at no upcharge? Titleist has (by far) the largest selection of custom options and a lot of them are no upcharge. Sounds like your expectations may be unrealistic.

when i enquired about getting ap2's last year they only offered the one shaft. all other shafts where chargeable. perhaps its different here in the uk?

That is not the case in the US. There are several no upcharge shafts available.

Mizuno actually does close to this. No upcharge on c-taper, px, Nippon, Px LZ, etc. It may not be every shaft put there, but there are a lot of premium options. seems like dg tour issue are not on the list but it's a pretty sweet feature, especially when you consider you're not sacrificing quality with mizzy to get that feature.

I heard that the offset of the AP3 will match the 716 AP1's in the long irons and the 716 AP2's in the short irons. The lofts are the same in the AP3 as the 716 AP1's. So the tour guys with AP2 will play AP3 in their long irons to make up the combo. I might go AP1's in 4 thru 6 and AP3 in 7 -9. Anyone else hear that?

I have the 716 AP2's. I didn't really like the AMT shaft because my long irons were ballooning into the wind, so I bought some Tour Issue DG's and installed them.

I like the Tour Issue shafts, but the swing weights were all out of whack, due to the progressive weight of the AMT shafts, and the progressive weight change in the heads. I know, I know - I should have thought about that first - rookie mistake. Now I have lead tape all over the back of my long irons to get the swing weight constant.

My question now is if I order the 718 AP2's with a single weight shaft, how will Titleist get the swing weight consistent? They could simply put a weight plug in the bottom of the shaft or they could manufacture two sets of heads - one variable weight to go with the ATM's and one consistent weight to go with most of the iron shafts on the market?

Some may think the weight plug is OK, but I don't like my irons to have a different weight bias (increasingly heavy towards the heal) through the set. To me, it makes each iron seem different in balance. Can someone more enlightened (smarter :D )than me please cast some light on this issue?
