I'm having sorta the same dilemma, and I'm leaning toward dropping my 5 iron. I have a 3W, 2h, 4h, and 4i. The 4i has slightly more loft than the 4h. I can lower my grip on the 4i if I need a distance between the 4i and 6i. My 4h is my go to club for long shots out of the rough or anytime I need accuracy/reliability as much as I need distance. I will pull out the 4i when I need that distance but feel confident I will hit the green.

I see nothing wrong with this line of thought. It's all about filling the distance gaps. Who cares about the numbers on the bottom of the clubs. Plus I have found alot of times that hybrids and driving irons replace one club down from their number. For example, a lot times a 4 hybrid will give me the distance of a 3 iron, and a 5 hybrid will give me 4 iron distance etc.

likely due to forgiveness of hybrids vs long irons and also length of shaft generating more club head speed.

A hybrid. Even the pros use them, they are so easy to hit. I think most golfers would do better with a hybrid in the bag, and buy a hybrid to fill the gap. Why do I sense that it's more of an ego thing (not saying this is the op) with golfers to not game a hybrid?

If the loft on a 4 iron is around 24 degrees, I play the 4 iron. Maybe will go as low as 22 with a spring-faced club. Below that, I am going hybrid or crossover. I play Srixon 965 in 5-P and carry a 565 4 iron and it is a quite reliable rocket launcher.

If you go hybrid, I recommend a 5 hybrid, which generally will go as long as a 4 iron. If you get a 4 hybrid and then start at 5 in the irons, you will have a gap unless you adjust the lofts. For me a hybrid only 1 degree stronger than the next iron plays as a club longer.

I like adjustable hybrids for that reason.

Secret to the 4 iron is swing it in smooth tempo, like a 7 iron.

An alternate take on this is to find what works for you, because golf can be a finicky game. Hybrids are great clubs for some golfers, but I can't hit hybrids well consistently. I have tried multiple hybrids and I hit really, really wild hooks with them that are score killers. I have found that I am better off going with the driving iron type clubs or irons. The hybrids do not fit my game at this point.

I just went to the TaylorMade RSi TP UDI 4i.... Yep a lot of abbreviations, however it is fantastic. I have had a heck of a distance gap between my 2hybrid and 5 iron and I have been trying to fill the void with anything I can. This has ranged from the Ping i25 that is part of my normal irons (Just couldn't launch it high enough), and a 913Hd with an Aldila NVS shaft (launched this one too high and didn't feel comfortable hitting it off of the tee). I found the UDI with the KBS Tour C-Taper Lite shaft and it has been just phenomenal. Looks great at address...launches perfectly and can really hit it from anywhere. It has been a great investment and has really bridged my distances.

To my surprise, when faced with a similar dilemma, I ended up with the Ping Crossover.

I hit the 5 Crossover a similar distance to my old 4 iron but much straighter and more consistently. I now pull it out wherever possible. I have more confidence with it than my 6 iron.

Seduced by it, I also nabbed the 4 crossover. I mainly use it off the tee but also hit better than any of the alternatives.

So I've gone from carrying a 3, 4, 5 hybrid then a 5 iron, to now carrying a 4 wood, 3 hybrid, 4 Crossover, 5 Crossover and 6 iron (albeit a strongly lofted one).

I'm considering dropping the 3 hybrid too.
