Is a waterproof bag necessary for Scotland?

One more rookie question for the Scotland veterans out there, how necessary is a waterproof walking bag such a Titleist's StayDry or Sun Mountain's H2NO?

I wouldn't buy a bag just for the trip. Nice to have but absolutely not necessary.

I read so much before our first trip to Scotland and completely over analyzed it. I read all the articles with all the checklists of stuff to bring and took tons of notes.

 

Here's my advice, ignore all of those articles.

 

Take two pairs of shoes and make sure you have a pair of rain pants, and enjoy yourself!

Bring wet gloves good rain gear and you will be fine

Ziploc bags in addition to the aforementioned rain gear and rain gloves. That will cover most of the bases.

I would say No.... it may offer a temporary reprieve but, if you're playing in a downpour, you and everything else will soon be wet..... rain gloves are the best remedy.

Necessary? No. But every time I've gotten caught in the rain, I've been glad I've had the H2No. It's not so much about keeping my clubs dry... It's more about keeping anything else in there (wallet, rangefinder, etc.) dry.

 

I imagine I'll just stick with waterproof bags going forward. Just makes good sense to me.

We make an annual Bandon trip and pretty regular UK/Ireland trips and some of us have bought waterproof bags and think they are good value. TBH, I think if you find one you like as a golf bag, that also happens to be waterproof it's all the better. I have both Seaforth covers, looked at both Titleist offerings (prefer the 4UP, to the larger one) and the H2no, and ended up with the Ping Monsoon. I now use it as my regular push cart bag (I have a light weight Sun Mountain to carry).

 

Along with a Gore-tex jacket (with pockets to protect gloves in) the waterproof bag lengthens the amount of time you can go before needing to concede to the rain and get the rain gloves out, as I find much easier to keep the grips dry longer. A 3 or 4 hole rain cell passing through can be enough to soak your grips in a standard bag, won't happen with a waterproof bag. It also helps keep jumpers and whatever else you keep in your bag completely dry when it gets wet.

A H2NO bag and some macwet gloves are essential for me, plus some Galvin Green waterproofs (expensive) and a decent waterproof hat with brim to keep water from running down your face and you can tackle pretty much any rain the UK can throw at you.

Scotchgard the bag you have now.... I do it once a year to my bag... the water just beads off.
