Kohler + Erin Trip

LBRMGR

Recommended Posts

We are looking into booking an early summer 2018 trip to Kohler and Erin.

Thursday:

Fly into MKE or ORD and rent cars, drive to Kohler and play The Irish

Stay at Inn at Woodlake or the Carriage House (debating if the $300 payup is worth it for American Club)

Friday:

Play Straits in AM and River course in PM

Saturday:

Drive to Erin, play Erin Hills in the PM

Stay at Erin Hills Lodge

Sunday:

Early AM @ Erin Hills and fly back depending on flight times to NY

Any suggestions for changes? probably only going to be able to get in 4 rounds...unless we stayed Sunday, dont see how we could play Saturday before driving to Erin.

First, that's a great schedule and you'll love all the courses. Having stayed at both the Inn at Woodlake and the American Club, you're only going to be in the room to sleep, shower and change clothes. Honestly, it's not worth the extra cost unless you have a lot of time to spare. Playing 36 a day, the Inn will do you perfectly. IF you do have some free time, spend an hour at the Kohler Design Center. Yeah...sounds strange but you'll see their finest products and the designs are amazing.

My only other suggestion is to take a caddie at Erin Hills and The Straits. Not only will it add to the experience but it will save a lot of wear and tear on the body. Erin Hills is 8+ miles with a ton of elevation changes. Having someone knowledgeable who is also carrying your bag will make the trip even more enjoyable.

I'm jealous. We make this same trip every summer but had to skip Erin Hills this year because of the US Open. We took our trip at the end of June. I second the suggestion to save the money and stay at Inn on the Woodlake. The American Club is a cut above everything, but unless you are with your spouse/significant other, I would skip it.

The trip to Erin won't take more than 1.45 hours, you would have time to play in the morning before your trip, if you can get out early enough...just a thought.

Also if you are looking to save money, just pay full rate on 2 rounds at Erin Hills and stay in Hartford instead of doing their Stay and Play. You can get a room at the Americinn for about $100. Have fun.

Trip sounds great, but I strongly disagree with this advice. Staying at Erin Hills is a true pleasure. The rooms, food, and service are beyond compare. After the scene you'll encounter in Kohler, sitting on the back porch and having dinner at EH will be like something out of a dream in terms of relaxation. If you're going to cut costs on lodging, Kohler is the place to do it. You could even stay in Sheboygan as we've done in the past. Great little Italian restaurant there called Trattoria Stefano, fantastic carpaccio and a decent wine list as well.

I'm also researching a trip to Wisconsin next year. Sand Valley looks really nice but I can't find many reviews on it. Has anybody here played it? Is it worth the drive?

I'm thinking about staying and playing Sand Valley, then Lawsonia, then on to Kohler.

Edit: Sorry. I just noticed there is a thread on Sand Valley. I'll go there.

I'd check out the golf Kohler package. You could do Straits and Irish in the same day for a $30 cart fee. The day earlier you could do River and Meadow Valleys again for $30. It was for us, $1700 for 2 nights and 3 rounds plus free replays and caddies. Meadow Valleys back nine is awesome.

I'm not sure I'd do River and Straits in the same day. Irish is a better compliment to Straits. River deserves its own day

Our group is all 60 - 73 years old and doesn't like to play 36 in a day.

I am looking at the Kohler packages. We prefer to rent houses, but may not have a choice since Kohler requires that you stay there to play River and Straits.

Save some money by staying in Sheboygan at Blue Harbor Resort. For about the same price you can get an 8 person villa right on the lake

Thanks, but I prefer a big house. Not to save money, but for the comfort of having a kitchen, BBQ and gathering place rather than eating in a restaurant three times every day. We buy our own liquor, snack food, and breakfast food. It makes it like at home.

You don't have to stay on site. I live in Milwaukee and have booked tee time a few weeks out without issue.

It depends on the dates. To play Straits and River you have to stay there next August. I've been on the phone with them exploring other options. There are none (other than change our dates to Sept or June, etc.)

I'll pay you a bonus if you can get eight of us on in August without staying there.

Yes, but we can't go in June. Our late August dates are firm.

This is exactly why i recommend the VILLA at blue harbor its basically like your own house. Full kitchen. 2 full baths. 4 bedrooms is the one we got.
