Not a huge fan of either of those guys. Know an up and comer.

Β

Jake Gillmer. Shadowed me for a while, now GG is mentoring him some.

Definitely get in contact with Jake.

Β

I wish I would have taken screenshots of the interaction with Jeff Smith on instagram last week when he was arguing with me that all pros with a bent left arm are great ball strikers. That lead into how millions of ams should bow their left wrist to keep from slicing and that you don't have to be a freak athlete to swing the club like DJ.

Β

He has since deleted this interaction and blocked me. I had never heard of Jeff until this. Needless to say, I'd stay away from Jeff. Good luck to you!

Jake is a really good guy, met him in KC when Monte was there a couple years ago. Edit: still refer to a couple emails he sent after the clinic with some good summaries of what Monte was working with me on, and lol, my favorite golf vid ever shot by Jake where Monte gets me into position, take a swing, hit one way right and Monte says, "Now we have a golf swing." Sorry for the reminiscing but just about exactly this time two years ago.

Β

Ryan also is a really good guy, wouldn't post the above unless it was real and concerning.

Β

Drew is a really good guy on here and in Vegas (edit: meaning lives there sure he's well liked there, also).

Β

Only Jeff Smith I know of who teaches golf is in Oskaloosa, brother to Jerry, also a good guy. If I was calling a Jeff Smith it would be him - but I doubt OP is headed to Osky.

Jeffery Smith seems pretty good. Don’t know how available he is for lessons. Travels a lot with tour and college players I think. Scott Piercy, Wyndham Clark and others

No offense to Monte but I think jeff smith is excellent

Β

I took a putting lesson with Jeff a couple years ago and "excellent" is exactly the word I would use to describe his teaching ability. He's very good at simplifying concepts and communicating them to the student, which is one of the most difficult aspects of the job. If I were looking for an instructor here in Vegas, that's who I would contact.

Β

I know Jake as well, and he's a good guy. He's a GGswingtips certified instructor, so OP if that's what you're looking for, he does good work. That said, he's not in Jeff's league (yet). From what I've observed, he's still developing his own identity as an instructor. However, he should be more available, and his rates should be better, so these are all aspects to consider. Try reaching out to both of them and see what you can learn. Jeff may not even be taking on new students right now, which would solve that dilemma....

Talked to Jeff 2 months ago, his rate was 425 for 90 minutes. I gave up searching for a instructor in Las Vegas. I have seen many out here and not one can get me to chip consistently.

Β

Definitely in the "not in need of new students" price range lol.

Β

Not meaning to derail the thread, but shanksalot, our own Dan Carraher (iteachgolf) does excellent work via online lessons. I've done some short game work with him and he had me squared away quickly and without breaking the bank. Something to consider for your situation perhaps.

I know him via our mutual connection with George Gankas.

Isn't Joe Mayo in Vegas? If so, he's the guy. The ramifications of such of a lesson would be incredible.

Β

cannot find a contact for joe

Β

I'm fairly certain bph was being sarcastic - Joe doesn't have a great reputation on WRX. That said, if you want to contact Joe, his email is [email protected]

What is wrong with Joe? Not in the loop on these guys

Β

Depends who you ask. Around WRX, the underlying sentiment seems to be that he's something of a fraud. Apparently he used to post here under the guise of being a beginner, though I'm not sure for what purpose. He also falls into the category of teacher that never really developed a playing career, but instead made efforts to understand the technical side of the game (ie, trackman) and make a name for himself that way. Paired with his strong personality, that clearly rubs some people the wrong way.

Β

Out of curiosity, what are you looking for in an instructor?

Β

He was really combative when he posted here.

Β

Credit where credit is due, he knows a lot about trackman. It's just weird to me when someone who is physically fit who can't break 90 is trying to teach golf. I mean, at a certain point, if you have information that is supposed to be effective, how come it doesn't work when you try to apply it?

Β

But he's created a niche for himself, so good for him I guess.

I have seen Monte, and have both his and Dan's video's. Taken online with Dan but I feel it would be better for hands on instruction then video for a refresher.

On the twitter it says he's director of instruction for tpc summerlin. I guess you could call tpc and ask for him.

LOL. Yeah...do that. You're funny bro.

I always forget about Mario, but I'll second this, as I've heard nothing but good things about him.

I actually called TPC Summerlin today to get rates for Mario. They gave me his cell number.

Β

I also asked the guy if he had any suggestions for another instructor that could help me with the driver.

Β

He said, "Joe Mayo is good."

Β

I asked if he was the director of instruction. He said yes.

Β

Honestly, I always thought that Joe was loosely using that title to promote himself but was not the actual director. Am I the only one who thought this?

TPC Summerlin may be odd but if you visit their website or look for them elsewhere you will find ZERO about instruction at The course.

Β

PGA lists the pros working there, which Mayo is not (not that he pretends to be).

Β

It seems....odd to me that a TPC facility would have a non-member as Director of Instruction but that is obviously the case.

Β

Compare that to the online resources for TPC Las Vegas and Matt Henderson and it is night and day.
