Golf in Louisville Kentucky

Valhalla, Nevel Meade (public), Chariot Run, about 30 min away (public), and University of Louisville Golf Club all have bent grass everywhere. Everything else for the most part is going to be zoysia fairways.

Believe Polo still has bent. The ones mentioned above do as well. A bit out of town, Henry County Country Club also has Rye, which is green all year.

As always, I have an open invitation for any GolfWRXer to join me at Hunting Creek... it's $90 including a cart. I think it's the best course in Louisville outside of Valhalla... at least it's the best I've played. Only one hole I hate (#6)... #8 is rated as one of the toughest in the state, but it's at least fair. Just shoot me a PM if you are interested.

Im working on it! I don’t think we’ve put any effort into getting ranked.

hurstbourne is no way the number three course in the state. They have a very nice clubhouse and a short course with a number of distinctly bad holes... I think it’s #2 that made the list of hardest holes in the state and it’s just a bad hole. Water 250-300 yards out on a 425 par four with a boring green isn’t good course design.

18 isn’t a bad par three... the par fives are all decent... but I have no interest in playing there every day. Forced layups on par fours aren’t fun. They take driver out of your hand at least twice.

big spring is better but not by much... it at least has some decent risk reward holes.

Just joined Persimmon Ridge/Polo Fields this week (the under 40 deal was too good to pass up). Both look in pretty decent shape, though wet right now. Persimmon is zoysia, Polo still has bent. Hearing an announcement may be coming soon on the affiliation with Oxmoor.

Will be at Heritage Hill the third weekend in March to watch my daughter play in a college event. Knowing that Spring is always unpredictable, what would be recommended for a walking spectator? Also, are the greens typically as slow as has been mentioned in earlier posts?

I'm not a fan of Big Spring at all. Not sure why it's ranked so high on the KY ranking list. Not a good course

Weather should be fine... I believe heritage hills is just past the Zappos outlet, so if you need different clothes, at least they will be cheap!

Yeah, I played it years ago. In decent shape but a fairly boring layout.

Dang. I like to walk when I play golf. I would not entertain walking Heritage Hill though. There are several long green to tee drives and some very up and down transitions as well. The holes themselves I would not say are problematic, just the between hole areas.

Here's a weird question: looking to come and stay with my family in the Louisville area some time in March. Would love to rent a property on a golf course if possible, but not sure how to look into that specifically. Any ideas?

I've been on Persimmon Ridge course 2x in the last few years. Both times it was very cold & wet...but the course layout is beautiful and somewhat challenging too. I really enjoyed it and was lucky enough to get to play it.

when Persimmon first opened it was incredibly difficult!! I think the conditioning has dropped off (have not played it since a HS tournament days) but you're correct the layout is there. Just need to get it firm and fast again

Hunting Creek is good. I played in state am there a few years ago but the greens seemed to be struggling. Guessing that is remedied. Routing is good except for 6 and the hole on the back where they ran out of room. Super tight par 4 up the hill after a par 5. 16?

Heritage greens will likely be slow in March unless they do something special for the tournament.

Been a long time since I’ve been to Hurstbourne but I’m sure it’s not top 3. Olde Stone, Idle Hour and Valhalla should be easy call for top 3 but I think Idle Hour likes to keep a low profile.

What’s the under 40 deal at Persimmon like now? I was there a few years ago before the Polo merger on a great under 40 deal but it’s just a grind to play there all the time. They had some conditioning issues as well. If the course could stay firm and fast it would be a more fun track.

We actually lost our greens keeper that summer... one of the hottest summers on record and we hosted a member guest the weekend before the Kentucky amateur... was bad news for the greens. They still haven’t fully recovered.

6 is the worst hole on the course... the smart play leaves you a blind uphill shot with 300 yards left to the green. I take a rip at the tree on the right side and hope for the best. That green is a brute as well.

16 is the tight four in the back... it’s fine until you get to the green... three tiers and a false front. Not particularly fun or interesting. Hybrid, wedge and stay below the hole.
