For real. My wife and I watch those shows sometimes and wonder WTF people are thinking.

Dumbasses.

My wife insists I watch it with her just so she can laugh at me when I call then dumbass!

i mean in an era when a lot of people buy a lot more house than they really need the tiny house phase is taking things to the other extreme. I can see where they could have some utility as a detached guest cottage or hunting retreat but from a day to day living perspective some people have lost their minds. My wife's youngest daughter (she's 23) who is as liberal and progressive as you can find and believes in living minimally thinks tiny house dwellers are idiots. I just saw one tiny house hunters where in the lead in they were looking for the perfect tiny house for their growing family. What? Mom, dad and two kids settled on 345 square feet. And that's big by those standards.

I’ve been asking for a follow up show a year down the road.

The other thing that always gets me. They always have an outdoor seating area set up. Wonder why you have to do that Dumbass!

I actually have seen a couple that do make some sense. A couple with no children that travel a lot, or a single person. But those who have several kids, wow.

I actually enjoy seeing the creativity of the tiny houses themselves, though I also agree they are dumb, have minimal resale value, and the novelty probably wears off real quick

I mean, just buy a condo

Sure you can buy a condo. But do you get to carry your poop outside in a bucket if you do that?

You sure can, but you don't have to do it

Also, might want to avoid members of the condo board, because that one time i did it....

i have been trying to convince the wife that we should consider moving into a tiny house. well actually 3. one for sleeping, one for entertaining and one for guests. she isnt having it tho.

side note, when we relocated to charlotte i was on per diem and we lived in a studio, i dunno how many sq but it was small and i really didnt miss space.

now i have a room for my drums, room for working out, a closet bigger than my first bedroom(i grew up in a trailer). the formal living room we spend a grand total of 15 mins a year in and a formal dining room that we eat in a dozen times a year. seems like such a waste of space.

Yeah one thing I see more and more of in these tiny house shows is that the buyer will make a point that they need space to work for their "office". As more and more people work from home I think we see more rooms as studies, offices or libraries in traditional single family homes. This increases their size and cost but also their placement in the house and construction allows for something important: isolation from household noise. There is no way in a tiny house you can create enough sound separation from a crying baby or barking dog or whatever and if your work requires a lot of time on the phone or conference calls that can be a problem. I'm all for not buying too much house but tiny houses take things too far in the opposite direction for me.

I am totally cool with the Tiny House thing for a single person or a couple with no kids. I actually think it's kind of great. If you want to live in a really place, an expensive place, a mountain, etc but can't really afford to do it, a Tiny House is a great alternative. It also can be cost effective and can allow people to spend more time/money on the things they want to spend it on (travel, hobbies, being a ski bum, etc.).

But when I watch these shows I start losing my mind when parents are doing this with kids. I get annoyed watching these parents force their kids to live out what may be their parent's stupid dream life. If you wanted that life, maybe you shouldn't have had children. I can justify it with a single parent and 1 kid (assuming they have the essentials like running water and their own small space to 'get away'). But watching a family of 4 or even just 3 try to fit in 250-400 sq ft is infuriating.

With that said, there is some appeal to quitting my wife and I quitting our jobs, selling the house, paying cash for a 400 sq. ft tiny mansion (the really upgraded luxurious tiny houses), plopping it near one of the destination golf resorts (Bandon), and taking up a career as a caddy. No stress, no mortgage, working in a beautiful setting. It doesn't sound half bad for a couple of 30 year olds who aren't planning on having kids.

Then I realize I have expensive hobbies and desires.

As a married guy with no kids now or in the future, I kinda get it. However it would have to be a 2nd place up in the mountains to get out of the desert heat as a summer weekend getaway. Reality is I would either be out golfing or hiking during the day, so would basically be a crash pad for us at night so 350-400 sq feet would be do able and better than a mediocre hotel room. Full time residence no way I could ever even consider it.

I’m 38 and paid off my house a couple of years ago/debt free. It sounds great but you really don’t have as much freedom as you think you would. 30 years ago you could get a piddy job and live just fine without a mortgage and still have most of the luxuries with less income. Now not a chance..between house insurance, car insurance, cell phone bill, tv/Internet bill, property taxes..you need a better than average full time job just for those things. I don’t know really how my generation and future generations are really ever going to retire?

The episode that did it for me and the show was a recently divorced mother of two. Kids were a 16yr old girl and 13 yr old boy. C’mon now! Kids at this age need their privacy and especially having one of each sex! Nope not this ‘career re-focused’ traveling nurse! A nurse of all things should know the sensitivity of her kids in this age group. They eventually took the camper with ‘lofted’ beds that were on opposite ends of it, but at the same height and both lofted. -_- Mom got the convertible dinner table as a bed.

I’ve since given up on the show but am now a fan of Dr. Phil and the likes. Just so I can see the same two kids speaking about their wealth of issues after the tiny house living. ;)
