A Wife and two kids how to mix in Golf

Recommended Posts

My wife tends to be more okay if I play 6am in the morning and I get back around 1030am (local course) than when Im out 12-5pm. Despite the similar time duration, having to get in the round early and help out with the kids and house the rest of the day. By the time I get back from the 12-5pm timeframe, the whole day gone by, and I am sort of allowed to get in a round once a week, but no range practice by doing this.

I have been married for 6 years.  2 kids, one is 16 and the other is 3 years old.  I get out once a week.  My wife knows that I play for a release from stresses as well as a passion for the game.  I don't go out to practice much, but she is pretty good with letting me play if the timing for it works.  Our 3 year old just started Pre-K, so it has opened up more time. We our daughter plays softball, and that takes up  a lot of time, so sometimes the weekly round doesn't happen.   I am sure it is a case to case basis to make this work, so it pretty much comes down to what your spouse will tolerate.

The only way I could make it work with 3 kids was to steal golf from work. I still do this, mostly.

Don't take golf time from your family time. The kids are only around 18 years, and the best times are when they are little. I've done a lot of cool stuff, but the only memories that really hit hard are when I was hanging out with my kids when they were little.

Golf is a selfish pursuit, and so I go to the office early, work extra hours when the weather sucks, contact my customers frequently, and always try to work myself out of a job. So when I want to golf I can duck out on a weekday when kids and wife are at school/work. No one knows the difference if I played or not, when they get home, I am home. I make it a point to be a smiling, kind, cheerful dad/husband, and I pretty much do whatever I want. I also don't say "I'm too tired" after I played a round of golf, or some other pointless pursuit, that isn't fair.

I golfed 7 days in a row last summer (had to work every day at 430 AM) and my wife never even rolled her eyes.

After raising three kids to adulthood, I’d say the key is balance. I never missed a single kids event because of golf but even with 3 there was plenty of time to play a few times a month. This may have been said already but if you sacrifice your own life and friends for your kids you’ll wake up at 50 and have neither. If your wife and kids can’t manage you being gone 12 hours a month then I’d suggest you’re barely living anyway. But that goes both ways. Your wife needs time to live her life too, and you have to be willing to support that.

Kids aren't that difficult. They like to spend time with their parents, like helping, like feeling like they are important or as my son says, just being treated like one of the guys.  My 17 year old daughter can operate a forklift, has helped pour Babbitt bearings, worked on forklifts, changes her own oil, my 13 year old daughter enjoys rewiring equipment, all know how to operate a forklift and all know more about moving equipment than most adults. We have crossed the country going on adventures picking up and delivering equipment. All sorts of museums, tourist traps, water parks, the Dells, biggest ball of twine, etc.  Take them with you to the golf course, let them have fun with you.

Today's time with my son.

Not to be insensitive, but try getting your golf in while juggling 4 kids ranging from 3-14.  Luckily, my 12 yr old boy is an avid golfer so I am able to get out with him quite often whether it be playing with him or just watching.   I love spending time with him, but there is nothing like golfing with your buddies.  My golf has been cut down to maybe once or twice a month and I'm fortunate to be able to golf with clients once in a while through work.   My game has really suffered, but so be it.  I'm not going pro anytime soon and the focus has turned to my kids.

By the time I'm able to get out there and golf anytime I feel like it, I'll probably need a walker 😞
