In terms of public access courses I'm a fan of:

Canal at Delacour

D'Arcy Ranch

Sirocco

Speargrass

Can't go wrong with any of those tracks.

Just a couple notes from all the posts in the last little while:

Golf Show - yup

Club work - Lyle at Simply Golf was my guy, but I've started to learn how to do this myself.

Redwood Meadows - Love this track. If you are not driving the ball semi decent, it's a long day with trees or water lining every hole. Some really scenic holes too.

Top 10 - Just adding a few more to the list that Double K started, The Winston Club(was Elks), Heritage Pointe(2 of 3 9's are solid, always vying for the best greens in Calgary) and Inglewood are 3 others that are worth playing. Blue Devil isn't bad, but it's kind of boring, but the greens are always good here too. Wintergreen and Redwood Meadows are about 30 minutes from the west end of Calgary and are good. Redwood > Wintergreen by a lot.

Cottonwood is an option if you go with VIP golf too apparently, I always enjoy the course and its a fun layout, they do some green issues sometimes tho. (I think you could change Cwood for D'Arcy and that statement would be just as applicable)

I built a Google map of the public and semi-private courses in and around Calgary a couple of years ago. It's got the course website and phone numbers as well for a quick reference. I've never actually shared it with anyone publicly, let me know if it works.

Looks pretty good. Just a couple changes/updates as Harvest Hills doesn't exist anymore and Hamptons went private again.

I think Inglewood is way to over priced. Never played there and found value in it.

I've only played it using VIP Golf(which is a fantastic deal) so there was always value for me. But I see how paying 100+ for a round and a cart would be a bit much. It's tree lined and has quick greens, lots to like about the course.

Top 3 public

Lynx Ridge, Canals, Heritage Point

Heritage is overpriced.

GlenEagles opening Friday as well.

$90 w/ cart...yikes

Nobody said they were cheap, or even reasonable.

Speargrass is a similar type course, with less houses, on the side of the same river, a bit further out of Calgary for half the price.

IMO Gleneagles is significantly better than Speargrass and they know people will be willing to pay that price (especially when no one else decent is open) so you can't blame them.

Glen eagles is one of my least favourite courses in Alberta . I would personally way rather play shag, , Foxhollow or McCall lake. It is possibly the most expensive golf course for how little value you get of anywhere that I can think. I think the design of the holes is just terrible ! One of the most confusing things to me is how they possibly get a Web.com tour event out there. It's probably the worst golf course that that tour has ever hosted a tournament on.

And they're always rude in the pro shop. They should be charging maximum $50 to walk and 70 with a cart in the middle of the season. Should be charging 50 with cart in March/april.

I would rather go play temporary greens at Fox Hollow.

Yes I realize this is my opinion and it's a little over-the-top. I just can't stand that place or anything about it !

Actually, the last time I played there, I shot 31 on the front and my partner shot 28! It was in a tournament. Our best ball on the front was -10. I think the course is very easy. It just has very little shot value. It's often in poor condition. There's houses lining most holes. The "signature hole" (16) is a 250 yard par 3 to the side of a mountain so I think it's terrible. Nice pic opportunity but that's it. And the wind! Oh my God the wind! It never stops blowing there.

The Par 5's are terrible. Run out of fairway at 300 yards on 3 of them. The first hole has a starter telling you that "you're not allowed to go for the green on this hole for slow play reasons" even though the green is 290 away and the layup is harder then just hitting it at the green. The driving range has floating golf balls and you hit into a water hazard and run out of water at 190 yards! They hosted a Web event with a 190 yard long, no drivers allowed, floating driving range!

It literally has no redeeming qualities. And they want $90 in March to play!! Seriously? $90?? It's criminal! There's not a blade of green grass out there right now. Winter kill everywhere and it's a swamp!
