Golf with My Son in One of the Coolest Amateur Tournaments Ever

Recommended Posts

So next week, my 29 year old son and I will be playing in "The Cravens" at San Gabriel Country Club, one of the longest-running, coolest amateur golf tournaments in the country

It's a 95(?) year old net, alternate shot, match-play tournament where the teams stroke-play qualify into various flights, and then battle it out, flight-by-flight, match-play, until winners are crowned in each of 10+ flights.

It's a truly amazing, first-class event that is run like a Tour event. 200(!) volunteers from the club donate their time and effort to make The Cravens what it is. I played for the first time last year, and my partner and I won the "San Gabriel" flight.

My son is playing to a 3 and I will play as a 0, I believe. If my son can keep his tee balls in play, we should do just fine. :-)

Have a look at the website -- it's unlike just about any amateur tournament anywhere....

Looks like fun. I miss playing with my Dad. We used to do the father/son gam event until about 4 years ago, and he just can't walk that well anymore (he's 89). It was a modified alternate shot. Both hit tee balls, pick your poison, and alternate from there. My main goal was not hitting into any bunkers! lol We actually won our flight one year, and I recall making 4 or 5 pars in a row (gross), which was remarkable!

Awesome and good luck.

First time our course had a member-member my oldest daughter and I played together the summer after she graduated from HS. Better ball handicap event. After my obligatory yank OB on 18 it was up to her to seal victory with her ball and a par - which she handled easily!

Only golf trophy I've ever received (she got one, too) and normally don't care much about that kind of stuff, but I smile and enjoy its pure, clear plastic beauty daily.

Have fun!

OB does he recap the round as well as you? Look forward to an entertaining read and wish you and your son all the best!

LOL! He's an attorney and an excellent writer, so he definitely could if he was so inclined! :-)

LOL, unfortunately Iowa was in the process of letting the particular graduate field of study in the history department she was pursuing die a death by attrition, so nothing Iowa could do do make room for her, though they tried - was just in Lincoln last week to watch her receive her Masters diploma! I must say Vincenzo's in Lincoln is one of the best family Italian restaurants I've eaten at, and I enjoyed the little par 3 course she works at in the summer. Will always be grateful to UNL for paying her to go there the last two years!

She took great delight in her black and gold Fridays during football seasons the last two years! She is headed back to Iowa City later this summer, probably getting out just in time as far as football is concerned - I really wanted them to keep their previous coach for awhile.

And you are pretty close - she would never remind me we needed her par to win it, but absolutely loves it when I bring it up!

Congratulations to her and all your family on the Masters. Terrific accomplishment. And its good she enjoyed the Black and Gold the last couple of years at Cornhusker expense. I think the Big Red is coming back!

And I'm guessing you don't mind bringing it up either. Especially among friends,, nothing better than "legally and legitimately" getting to brag about your kids.
