I Vist often, will be there for 7 weeks this summer.

My favourite is Cypresswood Tradition on the North side of the IAH.

Fun little course - Willdcat Lakes south but not too far from the Heights.

Another nice one - Blackhorse North up Cypress way.

I've not played Woodforest because it's WAY the hell out of town (north up near Conroe).

Cypresswood Tradition is the nicest public-access course anywhere near IAH. I think this is one of the top 3 routings in the entire city, public or private.

Cypress Lakes out 290 west is home to a junior academy and always has some of the fastest greens in the city (11+ on the stimp is common; I've played here when they were running 13 in late fall).

Clear Creek down south near 288 and Beltway 8 is a fun little track with some wild greens.

Timber Creek Golf Club is in the southeast part of town and features 27 holes with lots of variety across the property.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions played Wildcat Lakes which was a great little track and fun design on repurposed land. El Dorado at Quail Valley which also was an interesting undertaking asset by the City to purchase it and make it a Muni awesome clubhouse fun track. Then went and played the Wilderness down in Lake Jackson which had the best conditions and real country vibe but honestly that heat and humidity is ridiculous wont ever be back but in the dead of winter lol

Woodforest (best conditioned public course in town / has 3 9s)

High Meadow Ranch

Cypresswood Tradition

Golf Club of Houston (Greens still good rest of course a little burnt up)

Memorial Park (good muny but can be crowded)

Wildcat Highlands (little corky / lakes course is terrible)

The sad part is... In the 4th largest city in the country.... these are about the ONLY public courses worth playing. Houston just plain SUCKS for golf. I have lived in FL, MD, NV, CA and TX, and it is BY FAR the worst golf city I have ever lived in.

The Wilderness in Lake Jackson is one of the best courses in Texas, and the 16th hole features a legit Biarritz green with a 5-foot swale in the middle.

  • 2 weeks later...

Couple more suggestions if you don't mind driving. As with anything here play early since it's hot.

Moody Gardens in Galveston - Great track on the island that can very tough if the wind is blowing. Consistently ranked as one of the better public courses in the state.

Battleground in Deer Park - Nice little track with some good variety. Usually not very crowded but fun course.

Already mentioned but Traditions at Cypresswood is fantastic and I think Memorial Park is a must play.

I live near Quail Valley and play it often. Some more history for you. The Mayor of Missouri City is an avid golfer and his home backs up to the El Dorado course. When the owners of the course defaulted and walked away, property values in that entire neighborhood tanked. He managed for the City to acquire it through imminent domain. Now the City owns it and it's a huge money drain on the City but he uses funds from other programs to keep it in pristine shape. For the non-golfing citizens it's a real area of contention. The guy is a like a real life Judge Smails.

I love public officials who realize that municipal golf courses are quality of life investments for communities. Non-golfers can complain about expenditures there, but never grouse about public facilities they use - like zoos and professional sports team facilities(which cost many, many more dollars).

In the case of Quail Valley, the residents living on the 2 courses indeed consider the mayor as a savior, as apartment developers attempted to buy the golf course to build apartment throughout the former country club neighborhood - causing property values (and city property tax collections treatedo nose dive - the mayor created a win/win for all).

Quail Valley hosted the PGA Tour Houston Open in the past.

Regarding Houston golf - there are approximately 100 courses in the greater Houston area.

Most are private and many fine ones are available for visitors who are club members elsewhere.

Some of the best public courses are far from the city center making it inconvenient for visitors.
