I'll be in Palo Alto next Tuesday night through Thursday mid day and am looking to possibly get out Wednesday late afternoon and at least hit a range or something.

If you're lucky a member of Corral de Tierra will take you out (maybe we have some members on here??). It's an hour south of San Jose but well worth it. That place is amazing.

You could always do a 9 hole playing lesson to get on at Stanford, which is obviously right next door to where you are.

Moffett Field has some neat old school holes and you get to stare at the massive NASA hangars - but it might be in poor shape, not played it in a while.

Otherwise you're looking at say 45mins to get out to Half Moon Bay or just leave the sticks at home. The Peninsula itself is poor for golf, unless you can go private.

Baylands golf course in Palo Alto is a recently re-opened one that has a solid range and would be a good play for a mid-week round. It’s a links style course that is a lot of fun in the wind - which you’ll get out there.

 

May be able to hit the range with you on Tuesday evening depending on schedule.

Weekend - absolutely. Mid-week afternoon my one experience was a typical sub four hour round.

It’s the new place on the peninsula, so I think a lot of the heavy traffic is still from that attention. Pretty course and they did a good job with the reno, only gripe was the bunkers being almost unplayably fluffy - like quicksand.

You're here now. It depends on what you're looking for, or how far you are willing to travel. I'm more East Bay, which probably isn't great for tomorrow afternoon. Down towards Oakland, Alameda has a nice new course. Metropolitan and Monarch Bay are windy and links style (ish). My favorite is Redwood Canyon (formerly Willow Park) which you could get straight on and play in a couple of hours on Wednesday afternoon. It's serene and has a resident group of deer living on the course. It's hard to believe that you are in the middle of a huge metropolis on that golf course. Nothing special, but very pleasant. Unfortunately getting there from Palo Alto is like double root canal.

 

My advice is head to Baylands. Shoreline is a decent (nothing special) course in Mtn. View.

about 40 minutes south of Palo Alto you can hit a course called Cinnabar Hills. It has 27 holes, try to play the Canyon 9 as part of the 27. I don't think there is a better daily fee course in the area....

Was a unique experience to have to pay extra to hit from grass, pay extra to use a rubber tee for the mats, pay extra to chip and putt :)

Ha! Ya. I used to have a prepaid card IIRC, but still needed to pay extra to hit off the grass. I worked just down the road, so I'd go there when waiting out crappy traffic.
