Bettinardi Starting to Rust

I have a bettinardi studio stock #3 that is starting to develop rust on it. Anyone have any tips on how to remove it without messing with the finish? Pretty surprised by this being that I always keep it dry and its only about a year old.

Any carbon steel putter will rust even if you keep it dry. Whip it down with wd40 or any gun oil to keep a protective coating on it.

Funny you posted this as I just started to see some tiny rust spots on my Byron Morgan which is STAINLESS.....weird.....

 

They are very small and actually kinda cool from a character standpoint.... only on the face......

 

I was pretty surprised when I saw them....curious to see people's thoughts. I know everything can rust eventually. But, this thing isn't but 1 year old and I BABY IT.

It's not that the stainless steel is rusting it's the very small bits of tooling embedded into the stainless that's rusting. After it's machined and polished or bead blasted it goes through a cleaning process called passivation that is supposed to remove the foreign material from the stainless.

I think you missed the point. Neither the original poster nor myself said they minded it....merely asking why/if common, etc. My response said I think it’s actually kind of cool from a character standpoint. Just curious as to why it occurs. Worth noting, I play raw wedges.

Tremendously helpful! So, will that disappear over time? Or is it permanently embedded? It was definitely bead blasted...it's a Tiger inspired 615.

While you may keep it dry there is enough moisture in the air or times on the greens that the small remaining metal will start the process. The particles are probably small enough not to come in contact with the ball and remain on the face except where the ball is consistently struck by the putter face.

I contacted bettinardi about it but am out of the warranty by 2 months. It’s not that bothersome and is not too noticeable at the moment. Really just didn’t want it to get any worse.

I would use LPS 336 as opposed to WD40. It does a lot better and often used with gun cleaning and maintenance.

It's pretty permanent unless you could re-machine it,have it blasted again or have it passivated again.

Bettinardi had an issue with the original run of the Studio Stock line where the putters began to rust. I have seen some new unused SS #3 mallets in stores with rust beginning to form in the back cavity and the top line.

 

I’m surprised they didn’t offer to replace the putter for you as I remember others who were out of warranty with the same putter either got a full replacement or had the finish redone.

One thing you can do with carbon steel putters is to find some small desiccant bags and slip them in your headcover. The desiccant will draw moisture to them. You are still going to have to check on them from time

to time because they will need to be replaced periodically .
