Spent last weekend at Penn State at the in-laws.

 

I will say that the level of fandom at Penn State is gross to me. Just like anything, anytime someone continuously tells you how great something is, you will hate it. It's that 24/7 at my in-laws house. Always have to go on a driving tour of campus.

 

See that building? One of the best law schools in the country.

See that building? That's the business school. Did you know they have a room in there where you can trade stocks?

There's my dorm from 1823 or whenever I went to college.

 

And then all the Joe Paterno stuff all over the place is the icing on the cake. It's a cult. Full stop.

 

We hire a lot of people from Penn State, and the newer folks are ones that started there right after Joe Pa got fired. It's weird how they make it seem like it was a hardship on them. We had our backs to the wall because of the NCAA, but toughed it out! Uh, okay. Or, you had your backs to the wall because you were choosing schools circa 2011/2012 and decided to pick the place that institutionally protected a serial rapist.

It's funny, Shejay is an alum of OSU, but she went to PSU law school. After being around those folks for two years, she cannot stand anything related to PSU. It's a cult up there and the worship of JoePa is very disturbing.

This is convoluted, but my BIL has a very good friend in NOVA whose daughter is being recruited for D1 volleyball. I don't think the Penn States (who are perennially great, right?) Apparently, she's gotten way up there on the touch board (or whatever it's called).

 

Flo Hyman was the big volleyballer from my youth. Had Marfan's Disease. Then Sinjin Smith, Gabby Reece, and that gets us to Misty May Traenor and Kerri Walsh. There always has to be at least 1 well known US volleyballer but there will never be more than 2. Who's next? Could it be YOU?

Only worth watching because of the skimpy bikinis in the movie.

I was a setter/opposite hitter in HS and then some club in college. Played beach doubles for 3-4 years after graduating. I was always terrible at soccer and it was a great fall sport.

 

Beach seems to have the edge in viewing appeal during the Olympics, but 6v6 indoor ball is a great sport to spectate.

Oh yeah. I've seen Side Out. Such a bad movie. Awful. Terrible. No good.

 

I was much younger and in better shape back then. I could hit it on occasion, although I was mostly a setter/defensive specialist. Lots of top spin. I might have blocked somebody once. About as often as a solar eclipse.

I definitely enjoy watching 6 man more than beach. Much more complex games: setting, hitting, defense, blocking. Beach is pretty one dimensional. If I wanna see chick in bikinis, I got better places to go (shout out to IG golf chicks).

I remember they had volunteers from an animal shelter there with some animals and I sat and petted a cat that had no eyes for a half an hour.

Going back to college cults, what's with all these rabid fans of colleges that never attended said college? This seems especially popular in the south. I know those people didn't/don't have pro sports to follow but it still makes me want to punch those people in the face.

 

 

Something else that drives me crazy, and from my experience is isolated to PSU, but the number of people that say "I went to Penn State" when in reality they went to a satellite campus in west BF. Yeah, Penn State is in the name but when you say "Penn State," everybody thinks main campus in State College. Take that crap somewhere else.

I vaguely remembered that you went there, but it was a "Did Siegel go to Penn State?" thought. I wasn't sure. I don't think I've ever seen you with any PSU gear.

 

There are people in my life who I don't know as well as you but I can tell you with 100% certainty they went to Penn State. They are the bad ones.

 

Which satellite campus did you go to? I hope it was a funny one.

Haven’t been really fond of Penn State since my days as a Roller Hockey Goalie for University of MD. Both Penn State Happy Valley and Altoona were in our conference. Both were very superior to any team I had and business playing with. Needless to say, I never played a full game against them, but I don’t really think any of our goalies did. They were good. I’m still bitter.
