Grayhawk vs. Troon North

I'm bringing a group out to Phoenix for a trip to the PING factory and we have a day to play 36. Would Grayhawk or Troon be the better option considering they'll both be cart path only?

Depends on what you are looking for.

 

Golf only Troon North courses both better than Grayhawk.

 

Golf+food+service+ambiance then Grayhawk. I still think from a service and food standpoint Grayhawk is the best golf facility in the valley. So if you are looking for a place to play, then eat drink and hangout Grayhawk will almost always be my pic

I reccomed troon north. Yes the grayhawk service, restaurants & vibe are very good. However, imho the golf is just ok nothing special and that’s what should be most important

In that list of 6 I’d rank Cholla like 55th. ;). Kidding aside I think it is a terrible golf course. It would be hard to do worse with the land they hand than they did.

Yes cholla & talon are bad golf courses

Talon isn't great for sure but I think it is significantly better than Cholla. It is repetitive and jammed between housing but has good par 3s, an interesting short par 4 and a couple of good par 5s. Cholla has pretty views and maybe 2 decent holes.

I pretty much agree with the above rankings including Wekopa. I think my top 25 reflects similar.

 

The one good thing Talon has going for it over Cholla is 3 really good par 3's vs 1-2. The bad is other than a pretty bland mix of 420-440 yard par fours is it has the worst idea in golf design history an island green par 3.

 

Cholla over the years has grown on me a bit. I still think there are 2 too many tee shots that have a center hazard tree etc. 2 is an awful hole, 8 is not great but better after the renovation. Still not my favorite but it is not a bad play either. And if a visitor wants to place views over course substance I would still recomend Cholla over any Quintero Gold Canyon Eagle Mountain etc.

Personal taste is an amazing thing. I've played We ko pa a few times and prefer Cholla to Saguaro!

Pinnacle is the better course. The first 7 holes on the back of Monument is my favorite stretch of the 36. Really no wrong decision.

Monument is much easier. If by mid-cap you mean 6 or 8, you may like the challenge of Pinnacle. If you mean 12+, definitely Monument unless you just want to be punished.

 

Pinnacle has a lot more forced carries and narrower corridors.

 

They are both great courses.
