Locomotion was the one song that would get us all up and dancing when Mrs Patterson broke out the turntable in 3rd grade.

 

Now that I think about it, adjacent classrooms HAD to be envious of us rocking, dancing and laughing.

 

Our class was a mixed bag of races and genders who got along swimingly... while the "adulting" world outside try to influence us otherwise.  Thank you Mrs Patterson, Big John (unusually large "robot master") and Beth (unusually "matured" girl).

It's a hot day and there's a group of kids popping tar bubbles on the road with their bare feet.  "Hey, idiots, let's ride!"

 

Nothing else in the breeze but your hair and GREAT music wafting from teenagers cars and some hip moms kitchen window.

 

8 hours of absolute magic and freedom... before the street lights say it's time to head home.

 

You sleep like a kodiac bear cub... cause summer break just began.

 

I received for Christmas in 1970 an Apple Krate and it was just the coolest bike ever. Heavens those Schwinn chopper style bicycles were expensive .

 

That's $ 665.00 in 2022 dollars.

Circa early 60's, the Kool Kidz in my neighborhood were starting to ride 10 speeds.  My Columbia Sturmey Archer 3 speed was no longer sufficient.  Mowed yards (at $5 per) to save up for a Schwinn Varsity.  Was serviceable, but the lust was further up the Schwinn line.  Continued toiling behind a mower and in the summer of 1964, had saved enough (with $10 from pops) to buy a Super Sport.  They were expensive at ~$100.00.  Bad a** bicycle.  Agile, shifted sweet, pedaled fast.  Could put in the miles peddling about.  Added a rear rack and a saddle bag to haul my stuff.  Coppertone paint just like this one.  

 

By late summer 1967, my youthful bicycling era was over.  Acquired my driver's license in August, and a beater car.  Enhanced mobility changed everything.  These days, wish I had my 3 speed cruiser again.

Great post Fella, really enjoyed it.

I eventually moved up to a smaller framed Varsity. I just loved to go to the Schwinn store and admire all the bikes when I was a kid. I am pretty sure the one dad and I went to was in Birmingham, Michigan.  I was excited to get the new catalog every year as well. Today looking at the pages of a vintage Schwinn catalog still smacks me real hard right in the feels.
