Callaway Apex CF19 Smoke Irons

I ordered mine 1-2* strong and standard lies. HMMMM we put them on the digital loft machine I was blown away. Every single club was 1-3* upright and 1-3* off in lofts, they literally didn't hit a single one correctly, NOT ONE. Coming from MExico I have to wonder if their facility down there even checks or has the ability for QC for orders, I am not happy about my order. I play to a +1 currently and 1-3* in lofts and expecially in lies makes a HUGE difference in where my ball goes.

 

I recently purchased a set of satin Apex 19 at 1 degree flat from Callaway and shipment arrived from Mexico. I took it to a local shop for verification and 4-7 irons were 1.5 degrees flat and rest were standard lies. Terrible QC and not impressed, especially at the premium these irons are being sold at.

Agreed, no excuse. Some brands are better than others. The technology is there to dial in loft/lie with a tight tolerance but these companies want to mass produce with cost savings and this is what you get.

A couple of things we have to consider when discussing lofts and lies is measurements will vary from machine to machine, and how the head was inserted into the machine for measurement and adjustment can cause variances.

 

For example, if I insert an iron into my machine, misaligned at 1* flat of where it should be because I'm in a hurry or not really paying attention, my measurement and subsequent adjustments will be off. If the head was actually standard loft and lie, it may read at 1* flat in the machine. If I adjust back to standard, it may now actually be 1* upright.

 

I bring this up because the adjustments being done by Callaway are probably performed by someone who really knows nothing about golf and doesn't understand how small errors in measurement and adjustment can affect the overall product and its performance. These folks are probably given a short tutorial on how the loft/lie machine works, but may not really understand how easily lofts and lies can be screwed up.

 

I will also share that I ordered a set of irons from PXG with a request for all irons to be 1* upright. When I received them I put them on my loft/lie machine and found numerous discrepancies. Some irons were 1-2* up, some were standard, and some of the lofts were off. Now this begs the question "is their machine off or is my machine off?" Or maybe both?

The black finish is applied to a satin chromed head. In my opinion, they should have applied the black finish to a raw head. They should have just offered these in raw to begin with.

 

I dechromed the silver chromes, not the black smokes.

Callaway is a mess. I pre-ordered the satin combo, but Callaway sent half pro/half standard (not combo). Had to wait three weeks for replacement sent so I switched to smoke. However, then Callaway sent all standard and not combo.

 

Now I got a message that they won’t ship for a month. That would be almost 2 months without irons. Callaway has done nothing, not even an apology.

I received my smoke iron a week ago. Like others have experienced, the finish came off almost immediately. I had no expectations of it being permanent but at least taking some time to wear off. I wouldn’t be bothered as much if I hadn’t paid an up charge and waited almost 2 months to get them. As a result, I called Callaway today, they are doing a 1 time exchange for me to get me the regular chrome version, it took about a 10 minute phone call. Very easy to deal with - we’ll see how quickly (and if they are correct specs) I receive the replacement set.

This is certainly not what I wanted to hear. I went all in with the smoke elevate tour shafts with the smoke Apex pros and matte black MD4 wedges.

 

 

I don’t mind the finish wearing and kind of like that look, but I certainly don’t just want it all coming off everywhere!

I heard “back orders” for smoke are up to 2 months. I’m wondering if they aren’t re-engineering the finish?

 

Also, I hit off mats at the driving range, does anyone know if mats determinate black finish more quickly?

Damn i am going to call an change my remakes to chrome that is ridiculous. Yeah why offer black then if its that bad. And I don't care what guys say they are being used for I am picky about the aesthetic of of my clubs and if I'm paying that much for them they better look good. That really sucks i wanted the black

Yea I’m in the same boat. It’s more about paying extra for what seems to be a poor product. Again - performance wise I love them and I’ve been a life long mizuno guy. They’re great sticks.

I really like mine!! They do wear a bit, but I like that look. If you are hitting them all over the face they probably don't look that good, but center strikes they look fine!!

Is the finish the same as the black on the PM grind wedges from previous years?

 

it is not. I was hoping. But its more super dark bronze than flat black

To me they look like they will wear and rust. Pretty much smoke covered raw finish. The smoke will wear off and they will rust or look like it like we all want.

 

I just got mine 4-PW in APEX PRO. I don't care how they wear but whoa do they look great out of the box. The shape, size, and feel are simply amazing. I too like the Forged Tec Black Cobras but these Pros are a different animal. I think for the average golfer the Apex and Forged Tec Black are the best of the best right now.

 

Its taken a lot of irons to kick the MP18 out of the bag but the Apex Pro did.

 

I have all black smoke irons, black RTX4, and all black Scotty. Mean looking bag. Now I just need to find something to kick these darn JPX 900 out of the bag. The F9 have my attention but haven't succeeded yet.

Yes. Discussion has veered off track. WHY IS CALLAWAY INCAPABLE OF MAKING A DURABLE DARK FINISH?

 

I don’t think we will know outside of a Callaway employee telling us why they are failing at something.....which won’t happen.

 

Out of curiosity, which club has a durable dark finish? In my experience, they all wear terribly.

 

I'm curious about the black AP2s. Those are some gorgeous irons.

Kind of makes one wonder when no one can post any pics of this apparent finish issue. I mean I moved on anyway but I was still curious enough to keep coming back to see pics of the finish coming off when you look at it the wrong way, but still none.
