Want to make my wedges “illegal”

For sake of enjoyment of the game, I would like to modify the grooves on my wedges to increase backspin. What spec of grooves would achive this?

Either-or. They sell diamond tip groove sharpeners that do it. I’m not sure if they advertise them as illegal or not.

 

Just be prepared to shred the heck out of your balls. Obviously you will use Urethane covered balls if your goal is more spin, but the sharp box grooves eats them up. Lucky to get 9 holes in.

Changing to the old groove shape really wont do much for spin in normal dry conditions - and it won't make the clubs illegal either. Might help in wet conditions or in the rough a little bit.

 

If the wedges are old enough, might be worth it to get the face sand blasted. That might help more than messing with the grooves.

 

 

Although, just using some groove sharpeners can raise a nice burr that will add tons of spin - and be very illegal (and shred the balls).

Back in the day I had a set of X-Forged wedges with the original Mac Daddy grooves.....those things destroyed ProV1s. Fantastic wedges.

Those old wedges are still "legal" till 2024 for 99% of golfers...just can't use them in USGA events/qualifying

I still have TM tour issue yellow and red flag wedges that will retain chunks of a Pro V1X.  The Vokeys of that era, the SM2’s(?) will also yield all the spin anyone could want and they are legal for most amateur play for a few more years.  But, having said all that, I never use any of them in play against anyone because, while legal, it’s still not “right.”

 

Plus, their only real advantage is in playing from deeper wet rough.  One can spin back any current top line wedge from fairways or most light/first cut rough.

Me too.  I still have a brand new raw 56* SW that I think is 10 or 11 years old now.  And I just put another one in my bag that is satin chrome and it does not spin quite as much as the raw because the chrome finish smooths out the edges of the grooves a little.
