I stayed at Duck's last June. I liked the place, and the staff, but the town is so small there are very few options within walking distance. In hindsight, we might have preferred Gullane or North Berwick for a base.

In St Andrews I've only stayed in B&Bs on Murray Park. The Burness House is under new ownership, and I think its a self-catering apartment, next door is the Craigmore Guest House. I liked them both, the service felt personalized, the rooms were comfortable, and its walking distance to everything in town. I'm certain the Dunvegan would be just fine, but I'd be a little concerned about staying above the pub. If you're not part of the action in the bar, if you're looking to sleep earlier, the action in the bar could become a concern. I don't have personal experience there, perhaps someone else can comment.

I don't know, its a long walk home at night after a few hours of pub-crawling. And my personal bias, I'm not all that interested in staying at an American-owned hotel when I'm in Scotland. I did stay at Mr. Kohler's (less expensive) hotel in Wisconsin, and it was lovely, but not my preference in Scotland.

> Stayed at Ducks in 2016. "Shabby but quaint" with shabby winning. I've been to the U.K. seven times and if I ranked the places I've stayed, Ducks would be close to the bottom. The little store across the street had a good supply of the U.K. dark chocolate Kit Kats which was a plus.

UK Kit Kats are out of this world good. I would weigh 300 pounds if I lived there. As far as hotels goes, I have stayed at a number of the B&B's on Murray Park. Six Murray Park was probably my favorite. Brownlees is good too, but I last stayed there in 2012. They are all fine for my needs; cheap, clean, quiet, breakfast included. As others have mentioned if luxury is your thing you will be disappointed.

Tough to beat the views at the Old Course Hotel, though. And Kohler hotels have really nice bathroom fixtures. ; )

Kind of a vague question - plenty of small hotels, B&Bs and vacation rentals all over Scotland so I'm sure all would agree with me that those are all good options.  Just Google them and you'll get a feel for what is out there.

I almost always stay at small inns and B&Bs on my visits to the UK and Ireland. There are many good ones. I don't know which part(s) of Scotland you intend to visit, but here are a few off the top of my head that I have good memories of. They are good choices assuming you are not looking for 4 or 5 star luxury. These places will give you a warm welcome, a clean, comfy bedroom (some large, some small), ensuite bathroom, an excellent breakfast and are not too expensive:

Sandhill House if you are visiting Ayrshire. It overlooks Royal Troon;

Golspie Inn if you are visiting Golspie or Brora. It has a restuarant and pub;

The Invernairne is very nice if you're playing Nairn or Castle Stuart;

The Heath Hill Hotel in Fraserburgh. It has a beautiful dining room;

Seaholm House if you are playing North Berwick.  It's small, but comfy;

The Spindrift (In Anstruther) if you are playing Lundin, Leven, Elie, Crail or Kingsbarns;

Cruden Bay B&B.
