He’s not listed on their site as a ball guy

He had Wilson wood covers

I got it as well, specially says in the email he's a non-contract player. No ball deal, likely paid him to use his likeness however. IIRC Brooks turned them down for the same endorsement after his PGA win.

"Like Woodland, the runner-up at this year's U.S. Open is also a non-contracted golf ball free-agent and has the freedom to play any ball he chooses. He's relied on the Pro V1x since January of 2017 and since then has become a dominant force in the game."

That may have been more down to poor planning than not getting free balls. The tour trucks usually leave the site on Wednesday, so if a player (or more likely their caddie) doesn't stock up before then they'll be left to their own devices. Same goes for clubs - there's plenty of stories of contracted pros going down to the local GG and buying a new putter off the rack to game mid-tournament.

This. Identifying his ball. It really is that simple. Good gawd.

If I was one of these guys there is no way I would wear a logo if I wasn't paid for it, so I would do exactly what Gary was doing as well. I noticed before the round GMac was wearing a UA backpack, I thought that was a little weird too. I also noticed JR has his logo on his glove, so he's doing the same thing as Gary.

I highly doubt he has to purchase golf balls.

I'm really reaching here, but it could be for alignment. Example; with a thicker marking, if he lines the right side of the "line" up with the left side of the cup, he's now aimed a cup to the left.

Just a thought. I promise I haven't smoked any weed today.
