Original P790 users, still have them or on to new?

I’m a Mizuno fanboy.. had the mp18 sc, and dumped em for P790’s/770! I felt like I need the extra help, and being a lefty I don’t know If my game is up for the MP20 sel!

I have not hit the apex 19s but for me the 790s blow the apex cf16s out of the water in every category.

Got the original 790’s two years ago with Nippon 950 stiff. Great distance control, no flyers, browning on 7-PW. Awesome set of clubs!

I second that. Getting fit for the new 790 is a must. Also finding the proper golf ball helps.

Srixon Q-Star has helped in the last week.

Lastly i just added the 4 iron to my set. Wow. Another great club.

I just ordered a set of 4-P and I am a bit nervous. Coming from a set of Titleist 716 CBs and at one time an 8 hcp. I have had less time to play and hcp is rising. Fitting gave me more distance and higher ball flight that CBs but I wish the topline was less chunky. I promised myself to get over that and take what the 790s give you. Winter is coming here to MN but will try and get on a monitor a few times after I get them. I am looking forward to that.

Have you played with the P790s with any other shafts? I have the PX 6.5 in mine and they are a bit too much for me. I have been thinking about 6.0 or maybe LZ 6.0. Curious to know what you like about the LZ.

I love mine but much more in the mid/long irons than the short irons. The shape of the short irons is not my favorite and they are so hot that they create some gapping issues on the low end of the bag. But all in all, for most good to average golfers, they are awesome. (But as others have mentioned, they are not a good fit for low-spin players).

I’m my fitting I tried the stock DG 105, Modus 120 stiff, Modus 105 X, KBS Ctaper Lite. The LZ I think is a good blend of heft and control in an iron shaft. I liked the profile in the PING i210s I had and same goes for the 790s. The LZ will definitely play smoother to you if you think the PX 6.5 is too stout. The LZ is a very controllable shaft IMO. Good height and I had the best front to back dispersion with that shaft. I don’t have an aggressive downswing more moderate tempo and they are perfect

Anyone else have issues with original P790s going left? That has always been my miss, but that's the one thing I have really struggled with in the P790s. I am going to play around with lie angles a bit but curious if others have had issues with this and what solutions you've implemented. (I already have large grips and stout shafts).

I use the udi 2 iron and switched about a mont ago to the new version. Couldn’t be happier. Feels pretty similar, but felt like the head shape was a little tighter and more compact. Head is lighter though so I had to add some lead tape.

I recently purchased 2017 790's in August. Stock DG105 shaft and standard lie. I've been very impressed with them. The distance and control is impressive. While I like the shaft, the other day I got the chance to hit the 2019 790's with the DG105 VSS. It felt a little better but the numbers were virtually identical. I also hit the 2019's with a Nippon Modus Tour 105 and I really enjoyed that.

One club I really would like to demo is the PXG 0211. I like the look of the club. I found a local fitter so perhaps this week I can try them.

My experience is that you cannot go wrong with either generation of the P790's.

 

Personally, I prefer the looks of the latest generation, and have them in the bag.

 

With the first generation, I mixed in P770 PW and 9 irons. With the latest generation, I am playing straight P790's P-4.

I tried to put the full set of P790 w stock DG105 R shafts in my bag a few times but I just shoot better scores with my old SLDR irons. Hard to put a finger on but I do find they don't spin enough for me which makes holding long and mid irons into the greens challenging, i get too much roll out. As others have said the feel in the short irons is hit or miss, if you miss it's pretty harsh. I just play better with good old cast cavity backs. Still have the 4 iron in the bag though.
