January Golf Trip to Orlando...

Bad Idea?
thinking of taking a golf trip to orlando this january just to get a few rounds in from the more frigid norhtheastern months. the main reason i targetted orlando is for the reasonable prices on airfare and hotels. it seems that the weather that time of year is a bit of a wildcard though.
i guess i'm just looking for opinions on whether or not this is a good idea...and are there any reasonably priced alternatives? thanks.

Middle to late Jan is the PGA show and many people will be there playing.

Using the SEARCH feature will yield more results for Orlando -which is a VERY popular question always asked here on GolfWrx.
i know there's a search function...use it almost every time i'm on the board. but the search didn't reveal the specific results/info i was looking for.

gxgolfer: thanks.

Are you joking? I live in Orlando...take it to the bank that it will be 70* and sunny every day you are here. Florida has the MOST predictable weather on the east coast. Their is a 90% chance of sunny and dry weather for your trip.
thanks steve. that is what i was hoping to hear. i was just passing on what i've been told about central fl that time of year. i do remember though that last year seemed to be a bit chilly during the pga show.
I just moved from there after living in O town for many years. Just checked weather.com and the average monthly high is 70 with a low of 50.

Play Orange County National, two great courses where the Q School has been twice and outstanding practice facilities.
yup, that's one of the facilities i fully plan on visiting. what has your past experience been like in january? hopefully similar to steve's.

If you play early morning the temps are in the 40's. By late morning it warms up to the 60's. We get 3-4 days a year that the temp does not get above 60* and we get frost 1-2 days a year. Odds are in your favor that won't happen on your trip.

January is also our driest month. A lousy day in January in Orlando is 55* and windy. But like i said we get that only 3-4 days a year. It can get windy here, so I would bring a wind vest/jacket. However, the sun is still strong, and a lot stronger where you are from (NJ) so the sun warms you up quick.

You need to play Orange County National (Panther Course). It's the best golf in Orlando and has the best driving range/practice facility I have ever seen. Grand Cypress and Championsgate are nice courses, but get a lot of play during tourist season. A good bang for your buck is Stoneybrook West (where the locals play). Really nice greens and pretty good layout.

Good luck,
-Steve

The PGA Show runs the week of the 14th thru the 20th this year. Prices on hotels (if you can find one), and rounds of golf will all be up in price by 30% or more. Actually, it will be a zoo from the 13th thru the 20th. Orange County National host the Demo Day for the Show so you won't get anywhere near there on Wed 16th. Hope this helps.

yup, that's why i'm targetting the week before or the week after. the west palm/st. lucie idea may be another good one as i do have some friends in the area.

I have been to the PGA Show for 20 consecutive years. It is usually the last week in January but it was moved up this week. There is almost always one day that the temperature is in the low 40's and doesn't get a lot better but overall the weather is better than average. Frost delays most days but it gets warm enough to play eventually. I would suggest Miami for weather but it is expensive that time of year.

While the pga show tends to create havoc in central Orlando there are still so many other courses within the area its still a great time. However add this into the mix of the timing of your trip, if your considering new clubs at all the Demo day that is open to the public at Orange County national is January 12-13 just before the pga show starts, everyone is in town for the show and is simply one of the best demo days around, all the major oem's not to mention shafts components etc... so if you come the week before and plan your last days to be the 12-13th time frame get your playing in before things get to crazy because of the show and hit the demo day on the way out of town.

Here is the link to the demo day for you as well. www.golfest.com
I would suggest that you not go to Orlando during the PGA show. All the courses will be full, rounds will be 5+ hours with inflated prices not to mention expensive hotel rooms unless you stay in Kissimmee.
yup, that's why if i decide to go to orlando, it will be either the week before or the week after the show. different story, obviously, if i go to west palm.

Hi,
I also live in Orlando, and most of what's been said about the area regarding the PGA Merchandise show and its effect on the area are true. If you book your rounds early, there should be no problem.

Try EZLinks.com for booking your rounds...Good tracks and decent discounts regardless of the time of the year. Locally, you might also check out Northshore Golf Club. Near the airport, and a really fun track. Decent pricing even during high season.

Have fun!

Northshore is a nice track, I know the GM, Billy, and he takes good care of the course and the golfers. I also like Falcon's Fire and that hilly course in Clermont off of 52.
