Why would PGA object to Tiger/Phil + QBs charity play?

I would have preferred a matchup of Tiger and Phil on the same team against the young up-and-comers or young stars. Maybe Matt Wolff and Colin Morikawa, or if more star power is needed JT and Xander.

Put that competition on Pine Valley or Cypress Point and I may even pay to watch it.

What pray tell does that even mean? Do they need to agree with YOU or do you need to disagree with "them"?

It means the PGA Tour has an image to protect and they can't be the only major professional sport/tour to be sanctioning events if there is going to be a backlash on their image/value.

For example, if they approved an event and it came under severe ridicule because some or a majority of people felt it violated social distancing rules, that could hurt the Tour's image.

I.e. they want to make sure it is political correct to have an event before they approve it

To call your quite reasonable scenario "politically correct" is quite a stretch to me, but I see where you are coming from. I don't know that such a decision would be to "avoid offense or disadvantage to particular members of society" (political correctness) so much as it: (1) would attempt to follow the law; (2) be the prudent thing to do from a saving actual lives standpoint. This pandemic is real, the deaths are real- I do not see any of these measures as "attempts not to offend", not at all. I confess that I do find it worrisome that the mere thought or mention of a deliberrative, fact based process is now dismissed as "they just want to be PC".

To be clear: I do loath PC, it's become something old red ballcap wearing confederate traitors to my country hide behind when challenged.

It has the potential to be a PR win or a PR disaster and the PGA knows it. I feel like if they make a large portion of the broadcast (whatever THAT would be) about social distancing, and of course the charitable aspect, it would end up being the former. But it would be a fine line to walk.

You're reading a bit much into my original statement. It wasn't meant to be a comprehensive look at my viewpoint.

Of course I agree the Tour should and will wait until it is safe and legal to hold an event. I never said otherwise. To me that goes without saying.

My statement just focused on one particular aspect of the large equation: political correctness and image control

My point is that once it is safe and legal, they will still wait until it's politically correct. I do think certain professional sporting events closed before it was even mandatory to do so because they don't want to be seen as the one group that didn't toe the line of extreme caution.

It does have to do with politics, money, and image.

Look at the UFC if you want an example of a similar thing. They wanted to hold their upcoming events and there was no abnormal safety risk because they were not going to have any fans and the fighters are tested for coronavirus, etc. And yet, Dana White said that he was told by higher ups at ESPN and Disney to stand down and not hold the events. Was it going to be illegal or unsafe? No, they told him to stand down for other reasons.
