Tipped shaft does not fit into adapter

Hi all, I recently bought a tour blue ATX shaft and tipped it 1inch for my fairway wood per trailing instructions from Aldila. The problem is that it does not fit or rather only goes 0.25 in or so into a Cobra adapter for a flyz+. This does not seem right to me. What am I missing? Do I need to buy a new shaft and start again? How much do I tip it?

was the shaft new when you purchased it? I'm wondering if it's possibly been tipped more than the parallel tip length on accident was the shaft prepped and hosel cleaned as well?are we sure it is a .335 shaft or was a hybrid shaft purchased on accident?

1. pretty sure, Golfworks on both adapter and shaft. Plus stock length before cutting was 46 in as a new shaft should be.

2. What prep work is required? Remove paint maybe?

3. Yes, hybrid shafts are 4 in shorter with tour blues and marked as hybrid. I recently reshafted one, 0.5 in tipped with no issue.

You must prep the tip which includes removing the paint. Fine sandpaper should work fine as long as you are careful. Plenty of videos on YouTube to cover the topic as well as conversations on here.

Gotta remove the paint my friend. If you don't have a belt sander, I hope you're prepared for the ~1-2hours you're going to spend hand sanding/using a blade to get all the paint off.

Since it seems like you're new to club building, I strongly recommend you watch many videos on this subject. You need the right tools and you need to take your time or else you'll have yourself a new alignment stick after a few swings.

I wouldn't recommend someone new to club building to use a belt sander on a nice new graphite shaft without taking some time to practice first on some older shaft or scraps. It's too easy to take off too much if you're not used to using one.

And I know you're exaggerating with the hours comment, but I have no idea why. I do tip preps all the time by hand and it normally only takes about 1 minute.

Yes, 1 minute with a razor knife to scrape the paint off. Someone new would likely destroy a shaft if they used a belt sander for the first time.

You must have very fast hands or really good tools. First time I did one my hand, took me quite a long time... and that's why I immediately got the belt sander. It's not that tough to use one if you've ever done any kind of wood working, etc before. Good idea to practice on old shafts first to get the hang of it because you do remove the paint extremely fast that way.

Nothing really that special. Some people are a bit dismisive when I mention it but I just use a basic (coarse) flat file to do the work. You don't even need fast hands, just smooth strokes while you rotate the shaft.

Thanks all for replies. Yes I am relatively new and did not realize I had/could take off the paint. I just taped off the end to not sand past the adapter length. Cut a small piece of sand paper to the width I wanted to remove. Took about 5 min and seems to fit just as well as the section I cut.

GolfWorks will prep the shaft for you for a reasonable price ($3) - in fact they will prep the tip, tip the shaft and butt trim it for $8 total. Might be a good idea for next time, unless you really want to learn to DIY.

Question for this topic -  Ive started to get some club building stuff in my garage to mess around with. I purchased some Titleist adaptors off ebay (.335) and they will not fit a brand new shaft in there... is this because the tip is not sanded down?

Shaft does slide right into a Taylormade tip I have.

yeah im thinking the tolerance might be a bit tighter on the Titleist and thats why it won't slide in.......are u sure the shaft you bought is a 0.335 shaft ???  Also ive seen a few taylormade adapters in the past  be 0.350 in size.....I would prep the tip and it should fit in.....Make sure not to over prep the tip...use some tape to mark off about 1.25" and dont sand too deep....just abrade it and remove most of the paint.  Im sure there are YouTube videos on this.
