Hand on shaft

Am I allowed to put my hands anywhere I want on the club? Ive discovered with my 58 keeping my left on the butt of grip and right hand down on shaft label I can put the ball near where I want every time.

 

Im a short guy, this isn't uncomfortable at all for me and is very effective, for me at least.

A player is not prohibited from touching the shaft of the golf club when making a stroke.

In fact, if you look at the Equipment Rules you'll see that a separate "grip" is not required. ". . . club must be composed of a shaft and a head and it may also have material added to the shaft to enable the player to obtain a firm hold . . . ' Equipment Rules

Sui gave you the answer, but I'll share the thought that you might have been confused about the separation of hands due to the fact that it is an element of "anchoring" a club, which you may not do. Nevertheless, if you do not hold your forearm against your body AND separate your hands, you are good:

 

 

 

10.1b/1 – Player Must Not Anchor the Club with Forearm Against BodyHolding a forearm against the body during a stroke

 

 is an indirect means of anchoring the club.

For an “anchor point” to exist, two things must happen: (1) the player must hold a forearm against the body; and (2) the player must grip the club so that the hands are separated and work independently from each other.

For example, in making a stroke

 

 with a long putter, the player’s forearm is held against his or her body to establish a stable point, while the bottom hand is held down the shaft to swing the lower portion of the club.

However, a player is allowed to hold one or both forearms against his or her body in making a stroke

 

, so long as doing so does not create an anchor point.

This from the purpose statement of Rule 10.1 Making a Stroke: A stroke is made by fairly striking at a ball with the head of the club. The fundamental challenge is to direct and control the movement of the entire club by freely swinging the club without anchoring it.

As long as the position of the hands do not prevent meeting those requirements, no issue with hand position.

Rule 10.1a says, "The player must fairly strike at the ball with the head of the club such that there is only momentary contact between the club and the ball and must not push, scrape or scoop the ball." Rules and Interpretations

It was how the club impacted the ball. Yeah, I get that.

But I can't imagine a swing not like Lepps, with a hand on the shaft, like OP stated... that doesn't impact the ball in the same way?

Looked up that swing, I'm not doing that.. I'm short so its easy for me to hunch over a couple extra inches and give the ball a good whack. The back swing ends with the club head about knee height.
