Back from PXG fitting - learned I need more spin

Good post because it's an important post.  People get too focused on high launch and low spin and don't realize you can go too low of a spin and it can have a negative impact.  Basically when it comes to optimizing driver distance you want to think about it as optimizing hang time with lower spin.  The more optimal of a combination of keeping the ball in the air with the lowest spin will provide you the distance you want.

I've been doing a lot of research on iron play performance using strokes gained analysis and there's some correlation between performance and a combination of spin and descent angle.  Basically if you can increase the spin and steepen the descent angle without hitting a balloon shot the performance with the irons will likely be better.  So a golfer probably needs more spin with the irons than what the latest trends would have us believe.

What is the loft in your 5 and 6 iron on your previous set (I didn't see if you mentioned the model of the clubheads) where you saw performance dropping off (distance)?

 

Edit to add that I see that previous model was Apex Pro Combo set (19 specs) and that the Apex Pro Combo set lofts look to be the same as PXG0211 lofts

 

5 iron in the 23-24 range and 6 iron in the 26-27 range (23.5 and 26.5 for apex pro combo and 24/27 for pxg0211).

So the lofts look to be essentially the same between sets.

Yup - the lofts will be equivalent betw the PXGs and the Apex.  I think I have time to request PXG make the 5-6-7 iron 1 deg weaker.

You won’t be disappointed with the 0211 and elevate. They are great clubs at an entry price, even compared to Ping.

Definitely excited about the sticks, the price, and am hopeful that the Elevate Tours are a little easier to hit than the C Taper Lites.  I expect the heads will be no less forgiving than the Apex/Apex Pro's and hopefully a little more so.  Order has been in for 8 days and isn't scheduled to start assembly for another 10.  I'm guessing I get them right before Xmas.
