Looking for a classic book on putting

I’ve heard rumors of a book from the late 1800’s about putting. Is anybody familiar with a book like this?

Since no reply’s on this topic I’ll just show off the book I got today in the mail.

Anybody know any older books than this on putting???

George Low's book is a MUST.  The Master of Putting, written with Al Barkow, 1983 date. I'll upload a pic.

I think this is the oldest I have in my collection.  1940 copyright. Lots of pictures of pros of that era.

Here is how Ted Ray deals with the subject in his short book "Golf Clubs And How To Use Them", first published in 1922.

 

 

As a work of instruction I have to say it's a little lacking, see the second picture for his advice on hitting a good drive.....

I have a copy of that book, goes total against modern conventional putting instruction.

I checked my shelves a little more. The Badminton Library: Golf by Horace Hutchinson (1890) has a section on putting.

George Lowe was  the man who taught  Arnold Palmer to putt.The US Open in 1990 was

at Medinah country club in Chicago, I was with Toney Penna, Byron Nelson, and George. we were standing around practice area watchingDavid Duval  hitting balls. Curtis Strange ‘s Caddie walked up and said that Curtis had a bad round and wanted a lesson from George.

George said to me,”come on Charley , I will show you how

I’m going to make $500. While we walked over to the practice putting green ,I asked if anyone ever beat him  on the green.

 

George wore boots which had a steel  rod on the left side of his right boot. He would bet that he could beat anyone putting by kicking a golf ball.
 

He replied”, Yea, that  gd Little old lady at Oakmont.” There was a little old lady who did not play golf, but only putted on the practice green at Oakmont for charity of our choice.

When we arrive at the practice green, George introduced me to Curtis.After giving me cursory nod, he return to  hitting 10 foot putts.After watching 3 attempts, George said ,” you dumb SOB, I keep telling you that for you it’s not straight back straight through. You need to open and shut the door.” He held out his hand .Curtis reached in his pocket and gave him the $500.

I have the book .I think it is great. I alsohave BobbieLocke’s book. I think he was the best putter I have ever seen. His wooden shafted putter was bowed towards the toe. He had a closed stance (rare in my opinion) when I saw him at Tam ‘O Shanter and Midlothian  around 1947. He won the event at Midlothian by a large margin.

I've read somewhere that Bobby Locke "hooked" his putts, hitting them right-to-left. This Gary Player video shows Bobby Locke's stance:

Do you know if Player learnt that technique from Locke himself? With them both being South African golfers, it would seem quite possible.

IF he didn't learn it from him to begin with, I'm sure he imitated him growing us a boy.
