Looking for the perfect irons for a player without an ego.

You’re hitting your 5i within 4 yds of the PGA Tour average distance, and something is happening with these GI irons to get the effect of 10mph more club head speed and 1000rpm less spin. Not sure how this is possible…

Inconsistent strikes, over delofting at impact, skulls, etc...

Lots of potential reasons in swing that yield distance variables.

You should be able to find a good deal

on a decent set of clubs that will meet your needs, even try a lightly used set.

From the smallest clubheads to a brick on a stick, there are good choices for all.

Eggs-zactly. More like 20 more mph and 1000 spin reduction,,,,,,,,,

And while the spin reduction could be attributed to a strike above the sweet spot (he did mention "teed up"), which, just like with the driver, reduces spin,,,,,,, reducing it that much ?

+40 yards ? Agree. Not very likely IMO.

The OP was talking about 230 vs 190 as an inconsistent and, of course, unexpected result.

He also mentioned "no wind" so it seems to me he's talking about flush hits.

If not, I think he'd have mentioned any/some of those variables.

I would speculate that the 230 yield is the op's flushed hit, the lesser yardages were not.  The variable is the impact on the ball from the golfer, 40 yard variations are highly unlikely equipment issues,  lots of players use GI equipment, and have very consistent carry distances .

I typically hit my 5 iron 190, and my 4 iron 200. I find that sometimes I hit those two clubs 20+ yards further than I think I should on a shot, even off the fairway, or off a tee. I'm confident I have no business hitting a 5 iron further than 200 without a decent tailwind, so I can't imagine why that would happen other than the flier bit.

I agree that this sort of difference is pretty much impossible.

That said, the OP is an "8". I have to think that a single digit capper can tell the difference between a flushed hit and (even) a small miss.

Understood, but without any wind, I can't think of how the launch conditions can be SO different as to carry a ball +40.

Now I live in Florida where a calm day is a true rarity and 15-20 is far more common.

I remember one par 3 hole a few years back when I was trying out a different set of irons. 145 or so to a front pin with a pretty heavy wind quartering at me. I hit my 160 club,,,,,,,,,,, and flew the back of the green - probably about the same +40.

Now I HAD a rather frisky wind but I can only assume that I misjudged it and instead of quartering INTO me it obviously was going the other way, hence the "flier".

And we've seen cases of greens where over the back of the green is pretty steep and downwards. Ball can easily hit the downslope back there and bound another 10-30 yards but the player will only see the end result.

But you said you didn't have any wind. And you didn't have the flier lie in the rough. I struggle to think how that's possible. 73b80a_e8a86f5f975a415d934045bef90864a6~

there's an agreement among many golfers that many clubs in the game improvement and player's distance categories, especially hollow bodied or goo filled irons, have issues with this exact problem. These clubs can have the issue of inexplicably going 20+ yards further than they should on a shot. There are a large number of golfers that deny that this issue exists, but that's a discussion for another day, and another thread.

Now it's 20+ yards ? You said 40.

Regardless. There are plenty of players that don't know whether or not the sun is shining. And there's also disagreement among many golfers about this exact "problem".

And while I would suggest there MAY be something to a "flier effect" (NOT out of the rough) with some of these irons, the MOST I couldn't explain is about 5 yards.

And personally I would attribute that extra 5 yards to a "perfect" mechanical delivery at my max speed; something that doesn't happen nearly often enough. :classic_rolleyes::classic_laugh:

And I regularly hit a large variety of various PCB and GI irons in indoor launch monitors.

But in any case, of course, you do you. You're the one looking and you're the only one who has to be satisfied with your choice.

Good luck. 👍
