Midsize/oversized grips w/wedge

Anyone play mid/oversized grips on wedges only (50-60 degrees)? Thinking about trying it out but wanted to see if people noticed a major difference having two sizes of grips in the bag.

I don't switch from regular size to midsize in my wedges , but what I do is make my sand and lob wedges into plus 4's.  I find when hitting some partial shots and gripping down with those clubs having the grip have no taper helps me control the shot better.

All of my clubs have oversized grips in my bag since I changed from a conventional grip to a baseball grip so I can get more leverage on my downswing.  My scores have come down but it's mostly because of my improved short game and swing changes. 

 

It's just personal preference.  Try it out and see what you think.

Things to think about on wedge grips:

 

Not all midsize grips are created equal.  For several years, I played Winn Dri-Tac midsize and next Pure DTX midsize on my irons and wedges. For the wedges, I even had two extra wraps put under the low hand - I didn't want the taper to be too thin when I choked down.

 

Then I switched to the Golf Pride CP2 wrap in midsize for irons and wedges. Big mistake for me. The CP2 was designed to  have less taper, and ended up being just too thick for me to handle. I started having trouble squaring up the irons on full shots. Ended up switching to CP2 standard for irons and also long clubs.

 

Fortunately, when I originally had midsize put on my wedges, I forgot to ask for extra low-hand wrap. Just as well, low-hand was not needed for midsize on my wedges. (I kept midsize on wedges).

 

Some grips are designed just for wedges. Ping has a grip just for wedges, and Lamkin and Golf Pride have longer grips too.

 

 

Longer trips allow you to choke down more. Some (see above) have marks on them to help you measure your choke-down.

 

In past, I have seen pictures of "budget" grips made longer for wedges. Can anyone help with maker and brand on this?

I use CP2 Wrap Mid-size on all my clubs, but use Jumbo on my GW-SW-LW.

I like the added weight, and the thickness keeps my grip on the club more relaxed.

This is great! Never thought about a longer grip to allow you to grip down more. I might give it a go for all my irons. I don’t think I would like it for my driver and 3WD. Thanks for this!

I have GP TV360 Mid on my wedges and TV360 standard on everything else.  It’s by happenstance vice design as I’ve tinkered with my bag set-up and I’ll return to everything the being same after the grip supply situation stabilizes.  However, it hasn’t been an issue for me to this point.

Same here.  I like having the same size grip when gripping down on partial shots.

I have midsize Golf Pride MCC in my clubs including wedges, standard size felt a bit wobbly in my big hands. They made a positive difference. In these days when I get a new club, I immediately replace the grip to midsize.

MCC +4 midsize in all grips for me. Helps to stop with the snappy left miss.
