Thepunch_out - WITB Y2K Edition

That’s an awesome bag that could totally be played now (although that WB 2-wood could make things very interesting)!  In recent years I purchased clubs (primarily irons) that were of interest to me in my Jr. golf days. Most of the clubs feel really good.  The only noticeable difference is the distance from the older/traditional lofts. Today, OEMs use con tactics with their advertising to make people think they’re hitting the ball further due to advances in technology when in reality the lofts of OEMs yesteryears clubs were 1 - 2 clubs weaker than current clubs (irons).

Hit’em well!!

It's funny you mention the shady tactics OEM's are using today, considering that's what actually got me moving in the vintage direction to begin with. I had a fitting about a year and a half ago at a reputable but commercialized fitter that just totally turned me off of the new club scene. The fitting itself was valuable and I gained some great insights, but the gear they push and how they push it just turned me off. OEM's feel more like marketing agencies than manufacturers at this point.

The funny thing is though, despite these clubs being hilariously far behind the current technology curve, I'm playing some of my best rounds in years with them. Knowing they lack forgiveness keeps me locked in from shot to shot and making less aggressive moves in my swing. As for the persimmon, they're not nearly as hard to hit as they're made out to be and you'll never feel more rewarded than when you pure a 1950's MacGregor down the fairway.

I had a BeCu Hogan Sand wedge as a kid in 92-93 until I hit a sprinkler head.........in a bunker 😡

it had a huge dig near the hosel. For the trouble of ruining my club, hurting my wrist, and ruining my day, the gave me a free loop of 18 holes during twilight hours 😒

My cousin who plays twice a year,(work function and a memorial tournament)  still has my Hogan Apex 3-PW set he inherited in 2004!

Nice set of sticks. 👍

When I get a Simulator set up at the house, I plan on doing a nostalgia set as well.

Can you give more details on that putter?  How did you get a bullseye that weighs 350 grams?

It was a Scotty Cameron release in 2002, the Pro Platinum Heavy Flange. Putter specs were stamped on the sole 33/350 which I've always liked visually, and it has a very very slight face milling. I really enjoy playing with older equipment so a bullseye just feels like a natural fit in the bag, and this by all accounts this has been a great putter.

I love the head shape on these BeCu Special wedges and they have such a soft feel. I finally acquired a nice lob wedge last week to match the 52° & 56° so I'll be playing the full set this year.

As for your cousin, bless his soul. Hogan Apex blades are not an easy set of clubs to play when you only get out twice per year! Definitely get yourself a vintage set though if you're thinking about it. I can't recommend it enough, especially throwing in an old persimmon wood!

Oh, I have more forgiving clubs I just enjoy the nostalgia on recreational rounds. If I'm playing for change I might swap the irons for a set of Srixon Z765 4i-PW. The hybrid goes to a Ping G400 19° from the Hogan. I always keep at least one persimmon in the bag, but a nice 4 or 5 wood is more forgiving on a round that matters. Finally, if the course has slower greens I'll switch to a Bettinardi Queen Bee #8. I like smaller head drivers so the 983 stays, and I'll play these wedges until the grooves are gone.

I played the Ping Eye 2 woods 1-3-5-7 as a kid, (still in my mom’s golf bag) and always wanted the Ping Zing blonde driver, so I’ll probably snatch one of them up.

Hogan BeCu wedge

i still play the putter from my first set of clubs I got in 92’ ........Ping Pal 2

My other cousin, (apex brother) has my first set of clubs which were Diawa Hi-Trac TCS irons 3-PW. I may just reshaft them and play them

As the title implies, this is definitely a retro WITB. My goal with this bag was something I'm sure most WRX'ers can relate to, and that was to take the game back where it all started for me. So here it is, all the clubs from my early teens that were either too expensive or too hard to hit back then. My dream bag 20 years looking back is finally ready for play.IMG_20210315_132312_220.jpg.27b8546b5ce8eb63865668b0991e7d7f.jpgIMG_20210315_132312_230.jpg.0fa21f5077d2b15324fc249cd6a50791.jpg757840212_IMG_20210313_1335343412.jpg.f970adaf1f481fee25fea7b612ad8116.jpg

Clubs and Specs

Driver: 1- Titleist 983E 9.5° Speeder Shaft

2- Wood Brothers Texan 10° Dynamic Gold S300

Hybrid: Ben Hogan Edge CFT 3h w/ 6.0 Rifle Shaft

Irons: Ben Hogan '99 Apex Irons w/ 6.0 Rifle Shaft 3i-Eq

Wedges: Ben Hogan BeCu 52° & 56°

Putter: Scotty Cameron Bullseye Heavy Flange 33/350

Accessories: Bushnell, JBL, Seamus, Push-Cut, Imperial Sports, Sugarloaf, Bluegrass Fairway, One-Seven, Lamb Crafted

Great bag.

Have the "99 Apex in my bag as well and the 983E with Speeder is a long-time favorite with which I seem to have a semi-annual reunion.  The only driver I've never sold, even if I've moved on a couple times.

I've tried and tried, but 460cc drivers and I just don't get along. Given that fact, I have three older drivers I don't think I'll ever part with; 975J•VS w/ TrueTemper El 70,  983E w/ 757 Speeder, and a Taylormade R510 TP w/ 757 Speeder X-stiff.

Little over a year since I posted my first WITB, I figure it's time for a little update and show off this year's half set for the season. 9 clubs in a Jones Players Series bag is perfect for those weeknight outings. Some old, some new, some custom, some off the rack, but it's kind of the perfect blend.

Fairway: Orlimar - Lou Ortiz 5w

Is that a steel shaft in your TM driver?
