Vintage Ben Hogan. Iron Specs

Hey All...

 

I'm kicking myself right now; a while back I saved pdf guides for Mr. Hogan's vintage clubs... and after hours of searching cannot find them.  Furthermore, it would seem that the threads related to the topic on this forum are gone.  Insult to injury, the old sources that were on the line, returns nada regarding the subject.  I've exhausted my search and am coming back to the great minds here on the wrx forum.

 

Help Request.

 

Specs for 1982 Ben Hogan Medallion Irons. Sunburst not Copper Insert.

 

To be fair, might be cool to re-acquire the information or the threads I need to go to for any and all of Mr. Hogan's clubs.  Will save it to my new computer.  Need them as I have to get dialed in for a new set of wedges.  Appreciate any time and help you all can give.

ask @NRJyzr, he had downloaded the spec spreadsheet and reuploaded it last year.

A contributor in the Classic section put together the attached Hogan spec spreadsheet.  Don't recall who it was for proper crediting.  Perhaps this is what you are referencing.

Sidenote... for the life of me, I could not find any of the information you provided by doing a search in Forums.  What was I doing wrong?...

There is a discrepancy between the Equalizer on the PDF vs the Excel document... have to believe that the Equalizer is 50 degrees not 51.5... definitely curious though for sure. @NRJyzr

Had to do a bit of digging, and I actually didn't find the spreadsheet right away.  But I *did* find a zip file with a fair number of Hogan irons specs.  Including the 1982 Medallion set.  This is an image that was taken from the old Hogan site.

The search is imperfect for older topics, due to a switch in forum software, followed by another switch back to an updated version of the original software.  The indexing of forum posts was slow to adapt, and in some/several/many cases, didn't happen at all.  Finding older posts can be difficult.

Roger roger... well obviously thank you for helping re-surface this once in a decade asked for information!!!  To be fair though, I love my Medallion irons... they've helped me learn the swing in a way that my Titleist "game improvement" irons just didn't.  I'm not out of the woods; but they make me enjoy the game for sure.   Plus, great conversation starter once guys see me hit 2 iron off the tee about 230... Not a consistent stat 😀

I poked around the zip file a bit more....  the 51.5* loft is something seen on the 1972 Apex irons.  The rest of the 72 Apex irons match the lofts for the Medallions, its only the Equalizer that's different.  Which I find interesting.

The older irons had higher lofted Equalizers.  The sets I have from the 50's and 60's measure about 52 degrees.

So we’re saying 50... or 51.5 degrees?... Also, is there a way to go to a fitter and find out for sure?

If you're asking about 1982 Medallion irons, it's 50*.  

 

A fitter would only find out what the loft is now, not what the spec is.  Clubs get knocked out of spec all the time from use.

When the old Ben Hogan site from the Spalding years was still up they had these spec charts for clubs going back to the beginning.   I'm going to dedicate the rest of my life to finding them.  I'm pretty sure all Equalizers from 72 and before were at least 51.5, maybe 52.

I just compared a few heads.  If there are any other differences they are too subtle for me to detect.
