Why can't you take a practice swing in a bunker?

In fact, the discussion about making practice swings in another bunker began after VJ Singh's experience at the Doral Open in the spring of 2005.  Those discussions resulted in an additional exception being added to the Rule governing a ball in a hazard (old Rule 13.4) in 2008.  Cink's experience may have resulted in a new Decision being added in 2010.

I am going out on what I think is a sturdy limb and say, sorry this is not allowed.

 

I would have tested this out with my playing partners today, but every bunker I was in was the only green side bunker.

I'm gonna carry my sand wedge while walking.  When i come to an unoccupied fairway bunker and the others are searching for a ball in the woods, i'll take a few practice swings in the bunker. 

 

Might help, might not coz when i do get into the bunker i often freeze up and forget what i need to do.

If my memory serves well the case Cink resulted in an immediate declaration of a change in Rule 13-4 after the Joint Rules Committee had assembled and decided that the situation where a player is incapable of caring for the course is not acceptable. It was then when the addition for sole care for the course was added and it was in force immediately.

 

Funny enough, I was refereeing a seniors' national championship on my home course that summer and one player's caddie raked a small area of a bunker on his way to the player's ball and I happened to be right there. Had to call it in and tell the player and his caddie the bad news. Had this happened the year after there would have been no penalty.
