What club (and % of swing) do you hit for approach shots?

Gotta learn how to take more club and control the flight. 

115 is my Pw with my hands at shoulder height, hands at my ear gets me 125

100 is my 52 right at shoulder height, hands at my ear gets me 112

80 is my 58 right at my ear height

60 is my 58 is my hands at shoulder height. 

 

I never swing out of my shoes nor do I go 100% if that makes sense. For me I need a comfortable swing that I can fall on when pressure is on. I rehearse the back swing to the distance I have in mind and the follow through is always to me facing my target. 

 

One thing I learned is to not worry about where the head is but where your hands are. Easier to control that versus feeling where the head is in your swing.

With those shorter yardages, I am almost always flighting my wedges with partial swings.  Much more accurate to control the trajectories, direction, and spin by flighting the ball. Very, very, rarely hitting them full unless the shot calls for it and needing higher trajectory and more spin. I don't think in percentage swings, I think chest rotation. 

 

For hitting partial wedge shots or any partial shot, many use the clock system and think of where their arms are in relation to the clock. I'm sure it works well for them, however, I am not in that camp. I used to use the clock system, but it never worked consistently for me. If I focus mainly on arm position with the clock system, the arms can get too out of sync with the body (shoulders/chest) which can lead to inconsistencies with distance, direction, and spin. 

 

I prefer to mainly think/feel my chest rotation position on partial shots because it is easier to sync up my arms/chest/shoulders to be more connected and control partial distances better with the bigger muscles. You could say it is kind of a clock system, but the clock position is where my chest is pointed. As long as I focus on my chest rotation and being connected with my arms, my arms are generally in a good position.

I think OP has one of our typical problems.  Unless you are gifted to play your wedges, the less loft you can use from these distances to have a more controlled trajectory is the key to a smaller margin of error.  Sometimes you'll hit not too good shots and the ball will still end up in an acceptable spot on the green.

 

I see a lot of ams on Saturdays overusing their 56 and 60 from longer distances with terrible results.
