What would you look for in your next club fitting?

Recommended Posts

As the name implies, those of us in this folder aren't going to be in X or TX flexes.

I think, where current fitters miss opportunities with this group completely is:

1. More suggestions of counterbalanced shafts in drivers and woods;

2. Ascending weight and flighted iron shafts;

3. Experimenting with a variety of swing weights during the fitting;

I'm in my mid-50s, and I just have started to understand the importance of feeling the clubhead.  Due to large grips, I was playing irons that swingweighted to C7.

A recent fitting suggested my optimal swing weight might be D5 irons and D6 wedges!

I never swung a club that felt so heavy before.  But, it felt good and it made sense as I  have decent hand-eye.

Now that I feel the head, I can "time the strike" so much better.

Hope that helps!

Sounds like a fantastic fitting!! Thanks so much for the feedback. You're right, I feel a large population of golfers are neglected if they aren't in the 'exciting', high speed category. But the gains you made excite me!!

Thanks again, hope you're enjoying those clubs!

Hey, thank you for asking this group the question!  You're not that far from me.  May I ask which 2ndSwing you work at?

So my next fitting will be my first fitting, returning to golf after a 12 year hiatus--my irons and driver are 12-15 years old.  Now that I've retired I have more time to spend on the links.  I moved to an area with few golf stores and as a lefty the opportunity to try/compare clubs is almost non-existent.  Besides I'm probably the least knowledgeable person to be selecting golf clubs.  Luckily there's a highly regarded fitter about 2 hours away.    My major questions are as a senior is it time to shift to a graphite shaft, what is the appropriate flex(s) (my current bag contains a mix of stiff and regular not sure why I guess they felt right at the time), what is the right point for me to cut over from irons to hybrids, what makes/models can help me now but not impede growth as I get better (hopefully)?

In terms of numbers my swing is not' consistent enough (very high handicap) put a huge stock in numbers.  I'm taking lessons to help sort out my swing before the fitting.

thanks for asking the question it has helped me think through questions I want to ask when I get fitted.

Fantastic thoughts! It sounds like a great fitter, so they will know what to look for.

For graphite vs steel, your personal preference of feel, and the one you get the best strikes with is oribablt the right way to go.

Irons - Hybrid crossover will depend on you ball speed, launch angle and spin rate. Again, the fitter will know what to look for.

Don't worry too much about your consistency!! The fitting will and should be a fun experience! As a fitter, I can see if a club is working or not after about 3 solid strikes. You will take more swings, but mainly to ensure you like how the club feels.

Have fun!!!

I think strokes gained component might be the next revolution in fitting?

I love this idea! PING have come out with a cart that measures strokes gained/lost in relating distance to accuracy.

How do you think the best way to present strokes gained in a fitting would be?

I'm fitted for every club in my bag over the years now. Very content with my choices. Ik do think clubfitters don't take long enough to identify the miss of someones golf swing. Many golfers could benefit from certain sets which help eliminate their hooks or slices. Instead of taking the set that feels good or gets the longest distance.

This could be a *really* useful approach vs what is often provided.

You always will compare vs. a benchmark, but it doesn’t need to be based on tour stats.

For driver and fairway woods, the benchmark can be the clients current clubs or tour stats. If tour stats, you would need to select an appropriate hole length. Added shot distance in the fairway wins.

For irons, it’s proximity to the pin. In this case, the “pin” would be either the average carry or total distance for the particular club with zero left to right deviation. This would tend to favor shorter, more accurate clubs, and the difference in overall distance between club models would need to be discussed separately.

Driver - SIM2 MAX / Ventus Blue 5S

FW - SIM2 MAX / Ventus Blue 6S

Hybrid - SIM2 MAX / Ventus Blue 7S

Irons - ZX5 / C-Taper Lite S

Wedges - SM9 50/08 56/10 60/04

Putter - Odyssey Ai-One Milled #7 T
