The obvious thing I saw at the Korn Ferry finals

I live in Columbus, OH and my 11 year old son participates in the First Tee program. The organization provided us with free tickets to the tournament and even though I graduated from Ohio State, I have never been on the Scarlet or Gray courses.  I simply did not golf back then. I let him skip school for the day and we walked the course from about 9 to noon, then grabbed lunch and headed home.  I would estimate that over 75% of the competitors out there had the shortest backswings I have ever seen.  Is this the new wave coming from teaching?  I try to keep my backswing (especially with my irons) as short as I can, but I was amazed at how short these guys were stopping their backswing at.

Did all the short back-swingers have quick tempos or did they evenly vary between quick, moderate and deliberate tempos? For myself, I know that the longer the backswing, the more likely my swing will breakdown/cross the line.

They seemed fast to me. I'm more deliberate as well as I try to hit certain take away positions.

Most pros don't let their left arm come across their chest, like most amateurs do.  They also don't let their right arms over-hinge at the elbow.  So while they fully turn their shoulders, their arms don't go as far back as you might think.  I just watched a great video by the Athletic Motion Golf guys on it called Pros vs. Ams: Shoulder Rotation and Arm Depth.  Those guys put out some of the best golf videos for contrasting what amateurs do vs. the pros.

That video is one of the best instruction videos î have ever seen...

Pros definitely shorten their swings with mid/short irons since they're mostly concerned with distance control with those clubs, but I'm sure you're right about the shorter backswing. Their swings are so precise I'm sure they can tell a big difference if their backswings get even a little too long and loose.

Funny you should mention that.....I'm currently working on a shorter backswing, with amazing results. More control and better ball striking.

I know I'm going to take a bunch of Shiitake Mushrooms about this, but I think that most current swings on the Tours are a reflection of the contribution that Mike Bennett and Andy Plumber made with their Stack&Tilt program.

Maybe that's what the OP saw in the KFT swings.

I think it may be the appearance of such small movements in their arms because they make such immense chest and shoulder turns.

After adopting S&T, I went from a 12 handicap to a 2 handicap over a period of years.  I've moved away from it a bit these days, but still employ the important principles.

I've been working on the linked video,  shoulder separation increase

that  increase in initial shoulder angle[think it's 6*], is an amazing piece of work.....I can literally feel the increase during takeaway

I really admire Lee's lower body movements. Very similar to Moe Norman's. I like how they keep bend in both knees through impact and are not standing up on that back foot like so many modern golf swings.

The shorter/slower backswing feel helps me also, but when I look at film its more full than I am feeling.

Man, this video changed my game.  Gone is the extra movement.  Even though I feel like my backswing is too short at time, with more of a shoulder turn and less of the other stuff, my ball striking is much more consistent and easy to live with.

todays young pro is so obsessed with their swing monitor and hitting a number...Im almost convinced the winner each week comes from whatever pro ended up with the number they wanted into the green...In their mind they have a feel for how far they have to swing for a certain number, then it seems to be hitting the correct swing speed to get that number...dont like it but the new golfer is enamored with tech the same way modern day culture is obsessed and dependant on their cell phone
