It wasn't the width of the grooves but the raised edges he added that made the ball spin. Their was no need to measure since the face is clearly illegal.

A guy I’ve known pretty well won his flight last year at our annual men’s league championship but had his championship award revoked a few weeks later because he was spraying “Pam Cooking Spray” on his driver every other tee shot during a normal round. I guess no one knew what he was doing until he ran out of the stuff and threw it away in a tee box trash can. One of his playing partners called him on it and after the smoke settled he admitted to using it all year during all our tournaments, he was soon dismissed from our club. Had he gone uncaught he would have gone to an all expenses paid So Cal regional qualifier representing our club. The total cost of his trip would have cost us 1/4 of our total revinues for our club.

I know it has nothing to do with the original post but it sure does show the length people will go through to get ahead in our game.

It's suppose to lower the spin rate of your golf ball coming off the club face, which in turn is suppose to help with slicing or hooking the ball. Try waxing your driver with a really thin layer of Chap Stick next time your on the range. I’ve also seen people place their balls in “special bags” with hand warmers on cold days to make the ball go farther.

I have heard of stuff like this before. My friends and I were playing in a three man scramble one day. We were tied with another threesome, and on the 15th hole I looked over as my partners were teeing off. The guy in the other group is sitting in the cart rubbing chap-stick on the face of his driver, then he passes it to the other guys in the threesome, and they do the same. These guys never missed a fairway all day. Needless to say after the 18th we were signing our cards and I called them on it. They walked right to the car and left. Come to find out they have been known around the area for this.

It's a funny story. We all have a buddy that you hate sometimes, but he's still your buddy no matter how big of a dumba$$.

But unfortunately I've played tournaments with quite a few individuals who have taken liberties with the rules in some fashion. And it always seems to fall on me to protect the field. The first couple times it was harder to do. But anymore I have no problem doing it. I paid my $ and so did everyone else. It's gotta happen. I've stopped playing in several bigger events because you know there is a team or 2 or an individual screwing you.

Sorry you lost $1100! Is he going to pay you back? Or will you extract the $ from him one bar story at a time?

To the guys claiming that this guy is a flagrant cheat, I think that's a little misguided. It's not like he was using a juiced driver and kicking his ball out the rough. He was just sharpening grooves, and might not have known that he was going to make the wedge illegal. I highly doubt he was sharping it with the intent to piss off his friend, lose over $1,000, and get disqualified from a tournament.
