Srixon zx5 vs TaylorMade P790s(2021)

I am(finally!)going for a fitting for new irons in 2 weeks. After trying many irons at PGA SS'S during the past year, am impressed with zx5 and the new P790s...I will definitely want graphite shafts. Although I will see how it goes with the fitter(Golf Digest top 100), I would appreciate any feedback if I do indeed have to choose between the two.

When I was looking for new irons I hit the 770s (not the 790s), ZX5, ZX7, Apex, JPX 921 forged, Cobra MIM, and some Ping iron I can't remember. I'm a 2 index.

I ended up with a ZX5/ZX7 combo set 4-7, 8-GW.  It's a great time to get new clubs, especially if you are replacing something with some age on them. I liked most of the clubs I tried, just preferred the look and feel of the Srixons more. It also helped back then I could get them faster than the Mizunos or Callaways.

Scootre, thanks for the feedback.

I am a bogey golfer with a moderate swing speed and certainly need some forgiveness. I did like the 770s but might need the help that the new 790s bring to the table. I also want as soft an iron that my swing can handle.(I find that the new 790s are much improved over the 2019s). I am not against possible combo's with the 770s from 8 or 9 up, or same for zx7, but have been dissuaded from pursuing that from the PGASS fitters. The independent, expirenced fitter I am going to will certainly be more qualified to guide me.

I was going to say P790 until I read "soft as you can handle".  With that, I would say the Srixons for sure.  I have the P770s and my buddies have the P790 and they are a little more firm feeling when not middled.  I find the Srixon to be better feeling all over the face and they are uber forgiving even in the ZX7 line... Both are great, no doubt.  but I'd lean Srixon for feel and looks, as well as the sole design.

Thanks, Nixhex.

I actually would sacrifice a bit of feel in favor of more forgiveness, but if you seem to suggest that the srixon's are strong in both departments, that's a good recommendation. As for looks(also VERY important to me) I could see either in my bag. The srixon sole design is also a nice inducement.

Can't speak to the 790's but I'm also a bogey golfer (13.1 index) and recently switched to the ZX5 after playing Taylormade R7 TP irons for many years. I have to say these new irons offer tremendous forgiveness across the face and feel perfect when middled. I was sceptical about the stronger lofts, my 5-PW are basically the same lofts as my old 4-9, but these things do seem to launch higher loft for loft. I am really happy with them and just love the look both at address and in the bag. YMMV but I find these wonderfully forgiving.

I'm a lower handicap (index avg around 3.5) that's been dabbling in players distance irons for a few years now. AP3, T-MB, and then went from 2019 P790 to the ZX5 back in February and I literally could not be happier.

I found the 790s to be the most inconsistent of the ones I've gamed. And to me the ZX5s play very much like a normal forged cavity back, just on steroids. Very consistent trajectory, distance, and spin, and not a lot lost on reasonable mis-hits. Front to back dispersion is seriously impressive.

If the larger V sole works for you, I don't think anyone makes a better iron in this category.

Trust the fitter! I went from Adams CMBs to ZX5s and love the Srixons (and did not like any of the TM irons) but the fitter should be a great resource and guide you in the correct direction. Keep an open mind on all aspects of it, but subjective parts are still important. Look, feel and sound matter, even if they don't change your dispersion.

I've found that confidence you have the right equipment in your hand makes a huge difference.

I’ve owned ‘17 P770, ‘21 P770, ‘19 P790, and Srixon ZX5, and ZX7.

In my opinion, the Srixon ZX5’s and ZX7’s provide much better feel and control, are just as forgiving, and don’t have the clicky sound and feel of the new ‘21 P770 and ‘19 P790. I would say the ‘19 P790 provided more help with launch and distance, but sometimes at the cost of accuracy/consistency in distances.

With that being said though, I haven’t tested the ‘21 P790, so not sure what changes have been made.

At the end of the day, it’s all about what feels best to you…best of luck with your fitting!

This is an easy one for me as I left the 2nd Gen P790's for PING G710's big mistake. Sold the PING's for the Cobra KING TOUR MIM's fantastic set of irons. My only complaint was the were long from heel to toe. I like a more compact looking irons and I had to try the Srixon ZX5's and WOW! they check all the boxes of what I was wanting and expecting. I'm so glad I switched to the ZX5's very forgiving, great feel plenty of distance and looking pretty sweet. Best set of irons I've ever bought.

Haven’t got to hit the ZX5 yet nor the 21 P790 but I love the looks of the P790.  Saw them today but didn’t hit as I was there to hit wedges.

The new P790's do look better than their previous releases but the feel is very close if not the same as they will not come close to how good the ZX5's feel, but feel is always just an opinion. Be sure to demo them especially of grass not just matts. The V-sole glides through the turf with ease, love them
