Need advice: Anybody carry 2 x 3 wood in their bag? 16.5 and 15 loft? Redundant?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

new to the forums as i got to play a lot more this summer. I decided to upgrade my clubs this year via used department (upgraded to a 10.5 Sim MAX Driver ) and found a good deal on a 3 wood SIM MAX 15 degree (not adjustable). I currently have a Taylormade R15 15 degree adjusted to 16.25 loft. Instead of selling it, i thought about maybe keeping both 3 wood (1 lofted to 15 degree and the other one to 17 degree). my lower clubs are a driving iron 19 degree GAPR MID & 4H Taylormade M6 22 degree.

can my 3 wood at 17degree be used as a 4W or is it too redundant and will do the same performance and distance as the GAPR MID/3 wood SIM MAX at 15 degree?

The answer is that you need to tell us, or at least yourself that by determining what your yardage gaps are. Each individual player will have a combination of swing mechanics and speeds that is indeed individual, and your club choices need to reflect that. You can determine them in several ways, usually by direct observation, or the use of some type of launch monitor system.

With your current clubs, it’s likely that there will be both overlap and confusion in the results. Essentially, if you include both 3 woods, you will have potentially five clubs at the top of your bag that are intended to go “infinite distance”. In other words, your driver for instance is intended to go as far as possible rather than to stop at a predictable distance, and that’s it’s correct purpose. When you start adding more clubs that attempt to maximize distance you get chaos. With 5 such clubs…

I don't see less than a 3 degree difference being useful. As already alluded to the purpose of the 3W is to hit it as far as possible, especially off the deck. I'd keep the one that does that, sell or donate the other. If you've got slots in the bag to fill do it with wedges.

Almost certainly redundant woods, and might even want to consider scrutinizing the yardages of the 19* and 22*.  Might be able to consolidate to a 20* or so and simplify things even more.

I’m have 2 Mizuno STZ 3 woods in my bag, temporarily anyway.  One is at 15* and the other is set to 18*.  The 5W that’s supposed to be the 18* club is back ordered until mid to late spring, so I’m making do like this for now, but since it’s winter and there’s snow on the ground, it’s no big deal.

I don’t see much value in a 1.5* gap between two clubs, but that’s just me.

I did it briefly but with a broader gap.

Driver: 9

3w:  13.5

4w:  16.5

The difference between them just wasn't enough and the 3w carry was so close to the driver that I went back to 14.5 or 15 most of the time and ditched the 4w for a hybrid.

The gaps just weren't meaningful enough for me at those distances.

But for some people, it might be.  Go try it.

Find one and settle on it.

I have a 16.5 Sim2 Max 3HL that is really a OS 4 wood that is 3wd length. ( hey TM, just call it a 4wd! )

A little more loft than the traditional 15* 3wd, but I hit it just as far, a lttle higher and much more cosistently.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
