I don't normally hear someone with a degree referred to as a dropout, but you do you.

Shaq is also a dropout, but he went back and got multiple degrees.

When you leave college without graduating, you are dropping out.  Perhaps there is a stigma attached to that term if the era of PC police, but oh well.

Yes I am aware.  As is most of the sports world.

Sorry @Noles, I wasn't making a judgement / statement one way or another on this.  Just stating a fact that some might not have known.  I got no dog in this fight.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

Some of you need to look up the term "anecdotal evidence" and get familiar with it. Listing off individuals trying to defend an action when we are in a country of well over 300 million is laughable.

Can you be successful without going to college? Absolutely. Does college still open up doors that will otherwise be inaccessible without a degree, again absolutely. No matter what you better have a plan and if your plan is to be a professional athlete or social media influencer you are going to crash hard. As an educator if I have a kid who plans to be a plumber, electrician or some other trade I encourage them greatly to pursue that over going to college. However, if they are listless and do not have a plan on their future the statistics show foregoing college is most likely going to harm them professionally and financially. Fact is, college gives you a safety net and provides options that are not there without it. At the same time if you go to college and accrue $250,000 in student loans for a degree in Art History or Photography you are also financially idiotic. Can we quit acting like this question is so simple and so black and white as to say college good or college bad?

The "stigma" comes from the old idea about an athlete should "stay in school, the money will be there, etc."  Probably all coming from the whole amateur idealism(shamateur if we are being honest).  Even though every athlete would tell you that a musician getting paid ASAP is ok, and if a doctor could start working before they got the paper, they would.

IMHO, the "stigma" is nothing more than that.  At least as far as athletes are concerned.

The fact is, a large majority of jobs that have "post secondary degree requirement" have that there only to help limit the number of resumes the HR people need to sift through.  Some do require technical training(engineering, medicine, etc.), but to give you a real life example, I grew up in a manufacturing area.  25 years ago the plants would put that in there for line jobs.  There are very few people who cannot pick up 90% of those jobs within a day of training.  It just turns 5,000 resumes into 1,000.

I do agree with your point about Art history, etc.  But that is what is happening.  Since they have an art history degree, they are now "qualified" to apply for jobs that require little more than the ability to walk and talk at the same time.

Still a barrier though so your point is moot.

Also, unemployment rate is still lower as your education rises. Simple but powerful statistic.

If I were really interested, I might posit questions such as, are all those PhDs et al. filtered by those in the private sector where there is a marketplace for the skills, vs academia/government where the salaries are simply what someone says they are due to the fact it's not their money they are spending; or how many people make up each grouping; or the fact that employers using the "degree or don't apply" filter is kind of like moving the fences to 600 feet in baseball, and then saying the pitchers have improved because no home runs have been hit....

But I will let you have this.  You seem very dedicated to this mantra, so I won't rain on the parade.

This thread needs to move to a educational topic board.  I'd much rather hear about 9-10 year olds who hit driver 260, little kid workout routines etc...

I don’t know about 9-10, but there is this 11 yo 2x reigning USKG World champ who supposedly drives that far… I’ve only heard stories about her, but some on this board have detailed accounts.
