Grip weight reduction

I have recently had success with larger grips and want to move my irons in that direction. Most jumbo Golf Pride stuff is .75 - .80 grams which messes with swing weight. Jumbomax Ultralights I read don't last as long.

I was thinking about getting some CP2 jumbo's and lopping off the bottom 2 inches as I don't choke down on a lot of shots. I figure just less than a quarter of the swing weight would be launched leaving a reasonable weighted jumbo grip that would get thru a season. Has anyone tried doing this?

My question is why? If you are having success with them as is go for it. You will also find that most of the knowledgeable clubmakers her(I'm not one of them) will tel you that adjusting grip weight to get a swing weight reading is a fools errand. Personally I build my own clubs to swing weight match E0 or so ungripped and don't bother measuring after grips are installed. Again if they play good as they are just play them.

The weight of the grips will have no bearing on how the club performs. Don't worry about the swing weight. In a few rounds you won't even notice the difference. Now if you cut off the grip ends of the CP2's, you will hate them instantly and forever. Or, at least until you cut them off totally.

I wouldn't say it will have no bearing. Certainly weight at the grip end of the club will have far less effect than in the shaft or head, but it will still have some. I agree that the effect of swing weight is hugely overstated.

Superstroke Traxion tour club grips have proven durable for me so far weigh as much as a standard grip in the larger sizes, easily get a season out of them

Agreed...if they work they work and even if they didn't last as long as other grips it is what it is if you have to change them out every couple seasons or even every year in my opinion.

How large are you going? I really like the Winn Dri-Tac Lite OS as an alternative to the Jumbo Max XS. The Winn is slightly smaller and less expensive. In my experience they both last about a the same however the Winn is much better in wet weather or if you have super sweaty hands.

Speaking of wear, Winn Dri-Tac and Excel were always pretty bad for me. I never got more than a season out of them, and with driver I often had to re-grip midseason. I didn't care, as I liked the feel and do my own gripping. I like the feel of the JumboMax even better, so if they turn out not to be long lived I'll live with it.
