Fitting hybrid and woods to irons swingweight

Hi, in early 2021 I decided to finally get fit for a set of irons for the first time. It ended up with P770 5-P with regular Kbs tour 90 shaft as opposed to the S300 I have always been playing in my Mizuno set.

It feels good to play with lighter clubs, that I have decided to change my woods as well.

My question is as following. Should the swing weight of my new woods be the same or maybe even lower than my irons, which I guess is around D0? My driver swingspeed is 95-98 and my handicap is 3.

Would you recommend that I get counterbalanced woods or play shorter woods to get the swingweight to match up?

Thanks for your time

If you don't have a swing weight scale you can try to figure it out on your own using this link.

Counter balance shaft, lead tape under the grip or heavier grip will help with swing weight, but you might consider overall club weight to be more beneficial. Shortening the shaft, lighter grip, or drilling the head/hosel offers a few solutions for shedding some grams but one of the seasoned club fitters on here would know better.

As a generalized sweeping statement, players will often fit into woods 1 or 2 swingweight points lower than irons, assuming the shafts are of a similar profile.

It's entirely dependant on a number of factors including shaft weight. My irons are d4, my driver is d2, and my fairway is d4, all because of the match up with the shaft.

Once upon a time, Tiger played D4 in everything. I would get them built to 2 lower than your irons as a starting point, so can add head weight later if needed.

Swing weight numbers can never be a target like this, forget it.
The order of priority is Length, Total wgt, Balance, so dont turn this upside down.

Find play length, then use 15 grams pr inch total wgt as guide line, and 3.5 to 5 grams uncut shaft wgt for each inch play length difference.....THEN tune head wgt if needed, but DONT us a SW scale to guide you here, it cant tell you anything useful at all, its NOT a fitting tool, but a tool for duplication of specs we have found by trial and error.

Here is a chart for shaft weight progression to help you find a starting point for testing. If 95-100 grams is the range that fits you for irons, use the second and third row for suggestion for hybrids, woods and driver. ALL this chart can help with is a starting point for testing, it DONT tell you what you should buy or use.

Just to add a bit of emphasis to Howard's post.

Never use the swing weight of one type of club to judge what the swing weight for another type should be (the 'types' being: wedges, irons, hybrids, fairways, driver).  Also, even within the same type, anytime the shaft weight or playing length changes significantly, forget the old swing weight value and refit yourself for a new value independent of the old one.

If you do find you need to lighten the swing weight - always start by trying to reduce the head weight.   Many hybrids, fairways, and drivers have removable weights that you might be able to swap out for something lighter.  Irons and wedges might need some more advanced "surgery" to make them lighter - typically by drilling material out of the base of the hosel.

Reducing length would be the second choice for the longer clubs (you have to be careful with that approach for the wedges to make sure they don't get too short).  You can always test by simply choking up before doing any actual cutting.

Never use butt side weight to try to manipulate swing weight - although "counterbalanced" shafts aren't really counterbalanced so that's not the same as just adding weight to the butt end or getting a heavier grip.  They can help out a little in some cases.

Thank you so much, Howard and Stuart!

This is, as I suspected, a very complicated matter. I will read as much as I can from this forum and go test a bunch of equipment when the 2022 season starts. I definitely prefer lighter equipment, but I also realise that they can easily get too light.

Ill leave this slightly confoused, but also very intrigued.

Here are some driver specs from back around 2008, when I got fitted for a driver the first time in a decade. You can see how shaft length and grip weight (especially Burner SuperFast) can have an influence on what the SwWt scale shows you.

I played the HyperX Tour for five seasons. And by chance I now have the SuperFast in my all TM backup bag. And, the SuperFast doesn't feel any heavier than my current D4 ESX driver. (Main difference: SF is harder to control due to extra looong shaft)

Hopefully this helps illustrate the interplay of shaft length, shaft weight and grip weight in what the SwWt scale reports.

What's In The Bag (As of April 2023, post-MAX change + new putter)
